A loyal dog stayed by her dead owner's side for nearly three months on a hiking trail - and the starving pup weighed just 6lb after surviving on insects and chipmunks, and fending for herself in the Colorado mountains.
Rich Moore, 71, and his black and white Jack Russell, Finney, disappeared on a hike on August 19 in Blackhead Peak, located in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado.
The arduous search for Rich and his dog was the 'most comprehensive' in the Sherriff's team's history - and despite having other K9s searching for Finney and handlers calling out his name in the mountains, it did not lead to a sighting.
The missing man's body was then discovered by a local hunter on October 30 in the Lower Blanco drainage basin - and by a miracle, little Finney was still by his side.
Rescuers who had come to collect Moore's body were able to coax loyal Finney away from his remains with a can of dog food - after loyally sticking by for three months.
The gaunt dog was still wearing her purple collar with 'Finney' written on the tag, but the personnel said that she was so skinny it was drooping off of her neck.

They might think that Jack Russell was a meal.... until they tried to catch it.
Feed a cat for seven years, he remembers you for seven days.
Feed a dog for seven days, he remembers you for seven years.
“Sitting in the easy chair, eating cheetos like you, he could still die alone.”
Got to know when to hang up the cleats, champ.
My JRTs would do the same…
Incredible dogs.
Old fool.
Happy dead old fool.
I have done lots of solo mountain hiking. Colorado, Maine, Virginia, and Switzerland. The thing is to plan well and know your limits. I can think of at least three times I had to bail and get off the mountain because conditions were no longer safe. I don’t see anything wrong with the way this fellow handled himself.
The hiker looked like the Dem nicknamed Serpent Head (James Carville).
I salute the guy for getting out.
One of the things that irritates me and alarms me about modern American society is this stifling obsession with safety. 24x7, we must be guarded, educated and protected, often by government laws and decrees, to the point all of that has been built into a cage around people.
It has seeped into every walk of life, into all ages from cradle to grave, and across the spectrum of government at all levels.
Bad things happen to people. Always have. Always will.
One of my favorite sayings is: “A ship in a harbor is a safe ship, but that is not what ships are for.”
I say: “A human inside a prison built of safety is a safe human, but that is not what humans are for.”
So pitiful. Their loyalty is humbling. My Dad’s dogs died one by one of grief when he passed. Could not do a thing to help them. Disney made a movie decades ago about a little do named Grey Friar’s Bobbie. It was a good lesson.
At 70 my Dad was still topping trees with a chainsaw. Not often, but he did it. A lot depends on determination and blessings. My hero died feeding his cows, heart attack, sat down against the wheel of his truck with his dog for another sunset and that is where he was found. He was nearly 90. Good life. Blessed. 70 is Fall for a bit longer, not Winter.
You remember it too! Good to have company.
It would be nice to see what you become when you mature and what becomes of you. He sure looked happy.
We are on the same page again.
What a great story!
“Old fool”
The he!! with you. I’ll live or die doing what I want.
Well said very well said
He traded a safe prison for time in God’s nature.
He lived a better life than many.
How many obese 70 year olds die from inactivity? Too many
RIP fellow traveler and may Finney get all the treats she can
I’ve had three JRs over the years. Every one of them would do the same for me I’m sure. They are born vermin hunter killers by nature.
Yep!
With you. I do hope to outlive my wife and cats and dogs though. Like your tag and I love me some Brooklyn.
I like your spunk son! As an “old fool”/curmudgeon myself (octogenarian plus), I reserve the right to be a schmuck!😀
