Is red meat intake linked to inflammation?
Medical Xpress / Baylor College of Medicine / The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ^ | Oct. 26, 2023 | Homa Warren / Alexis C. Wood et al

Inflammation is a risk factor for many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), and the impact of diet on inflammation is an area of growing scientific interest. In particular, recommendations to limit red meat consumption are often based, in part, on old studies suggesting that red meat negatively affects inflammation—yet more recent studies have not supported this.

"The role of diet, including red meat, on inflammation and disease risk has not been adequately studied, which can lead to public health recommendations that are not based on strong evidence," said Dr. Alexis Wood. "Our team sought to take a closer look by using metabolite data in the blood, which can provide a more direct link between diet and health."

Wood and her team analyzed cross-sectional data captured from approximately 4,000 older adults participating in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), and recently published their findings.

Researchers found that when adjusted for body mass index (BMI), intake of unprocessed and processed red meat (beef, pork or lamb) was not directly associated with any markers of inflammation, suggesting that body weight, not red meat, may be the driver of increased systemic inflammation. Of particular interest was the lack of a link between red meat intake and C-reactive protein (CRP), the major inflammatory risk marker of chronic disease.

"Our analysis adds to the growing body of evidence that indicates the importance of measuring plasma markers, such as metabolites, to track diet and disease risk associations, versus relying on self-reported dietary intake alone," Wood said. "Our analysis does not support previous observational research associations linking red meat intake and inflammation."

Wood said: "Red meat is popular, accessible and palatable—and its place in our diet has deep cultural roots. Given this, recommendations about reducing consumption should be supported by strong scientific evidence, which doesn't yet exist."

Dr. Robert Malone wrote about this a few months back. How he’d been vegan for decades, but was losing energy, having a lot of “age-related” issues he attributed to diet… so he and his wife switched back to eating meat.

VOILA!

Not a miracle cure, but has helped immensely, AND he also couldn’t find anything definitive regarding the dreaded (natural healing scam bugaboo) “inflammation” related to carnivore diets.

As a doctor of 30+ years, I’ve seen a LOT of fat slob meat eaters and a metric buttload of asthenic vegans looking like the prisoners found in Dachau labor camp in ‘45. As far as FITNESS goes? The most fit physically, psychosocially, politically, spiritually, were meat protein eaters and hunters. In moderation, along with a lot of plants.

"Sounds like they didn’t get the ‘correct’ results (which is to show red meat kills), so no more federal funding for them."

No, kidding. As soon as I saw those results I went to see who paid for the research and whether they would be happy or angry.

I found "The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is a medical research study involving more than 6,000 men and women from six communities in the United States. MESA is sponsored by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health."

So, yes, I doubt NIH is happy with their findings. They were hoping for findings to force everybody to eat bugs by 2028.

A good 50 years ago, I saw a program on NOVA, I believe it was, about an environmental clinic in the Chicago area. There was a doctor who had discovered that red meat made his arthritis flare up really bad. For the purposes of demonstration, he ate a 2 inch square of steak. He showed his hands before he ate the steak and the day after he ate it. His hands looked fairly normal before. The day after, every one of his finger joints were swollen many times the normal, and he was in agony, with tears running down his face. Also, one of my family members had such bad arthritis that she had to crawl around instead of walking. She found after eliminating foods her rheumatologist recommended, which in her case was tomatoes and beef, that her joint pain disappeared. She was diagnosed with transient arthritis, but as long as she avoided those two foods, she was fine. I don’t think red meat is inflammatory to most people, but it certainly was for those two.

Thanks. Doctors have been telling me to avoid red meat, but I never did. I don’t care for chicken very often, I like seafood but not everyday. Anyway, the results of “expert studies” depends on who paid for the study, I figure. And they change their mind about every 10 years.

Red meat’s inflammatory effect is neutralized by immersing it in a sizzling pool of garlic butter.

Eat what you want to eat. If you’re fat, eat less. Either way, don’t forget to exercise.

That is all.

Red meat is good for you if grass fed and finished. It’s all the chemicals added to factory farm beef that is a problem.

Is that northeast Texas?

There is definitely a degree of relativity involved in such things.

As far as Im concerned, all of you living below about 43 degrees counts as the deep south.

If you want to get your red meat from "eating zee bugz", you'll probably have to eat a bowlful or two of these little red critters...

Of course, there's been a lot of controversy around red meat, especially processed red meat, meat is better for you than the alternatives! I'm not sure if you posted this already, but:

Meat-eating extends human life expectancy worldwide

The globalists want us to ‘have nothing and like it’. One of their plans is to have us eat bugs. Chitin (bug body covering) triggers inflammation in humans.

I totally understand, but for health reasons I have been switching to ground turkey for a protein where ground hamburger or pork is called for.

I have been using round turkey in an excellent recipe I created—sort of a Thai Fusion. First its shallots, garlic and thai chiles ( a dozen or so) sliced and then ground up in a mortar and pestle. That “sambal” is cooked in my wok with some oil and the ground turkey.

After that mixure is cooked I add a can of panang curry (Thai). I cooke that and mix it thoroughly in the ground turkey mixture. I then add a cup of coconut milk.

Somewhere in that process things like carrots or other veggies can be added. When they go depends on the type of veggie. Carrots take longer than other items.

Once the mixture begins to cook down add some coriander leaves or maybe holy basil for a different taste. Serve with Parish Rice*

* Parish Rice is rather new. Developed with growers and Louisiana University (?) it is a white rice that has a glycemic index of 43! That is the lowest starch one will find. It cooks well and kinda like a sticky rice—which for this meal is just fine.

Parish Rice is hard to find outside Louisiana/Texas area. Mail order is best. I bought it from the grower. A 25 pound bag for $54 and free shipping. So its $2/pound. Expensive, but I am paying for shipping in the price and it really doesn’t matter for a glycemic index of 43. That’s 30 points lower than regular whit rice and seven points lower than brown rice.

My next goal is to grind up the rice into a flour and make slurry to create my own rice noodles for things like Dan-Dan noodles, etc...

"Is red meat intake linked to inflammation?"

Darn right it is...

Hot red center means it's been inflamed just right.

I just started an all-beef diet Monday. Not kidding.

Jordan Peterson has been doing it for five years and it has helped him lose weight, gain muscle, and improve his mental clarity.

His daughter tried it first and it reversed her childhood arthritis and allergies, and greatly improved her health. She gave a TED talk on this, but the organization banned it because an all-beef diet is apparently politically incorrect.

Helps to have a couple snails sauteed in that garlic butter, as well.

abk, thank you very much for the recipe and cooking tips. Holy basil- what is that?

Am I correct in assuming that you are diabetic? I’m not, but it’s still a good tip about the Parish Rice. My daughter’s boyfriend is Type 2, so he has to keep a close eye on what he eats. I appreciate the advice, and I’m going to save that recipe. We have to get another wok, however. We used to have an electric one that we had second hand, and it worked great, until the day it stopped working.
