All this talk of giving your fruits and vegetables a bath I honestly don’t know how I have survived as long as I have. Maybe it’s because I ate dirt, tar off of road, played with mercury from thermometer etc. as a child.

When I get ready to eat my fruits/vegies I just give them a quick shower then I peel the outer layer off of my green onions. My lettuce I never shower because I am not going to take the time to pat every leaf dry nor buy one of those contraptions you fling around your head outside to get rid of the water. I just peel several layers off throw them away,
then break up the rest.

You may not want to come eat at my house. :-)

Nobody wants to come here either. Cadbury helps me cook.

That’s why Dolly is our Island chef!

This is how you’ve made it so long, Spunky! And you’re sharp as a tack! You’ve probably got a great immune system.

Truth be told, I do about the same. Wash outer leaves, run the fruit under water, peel the green onion. Nobody may want to eat at my house either lol.

My pies are ok though. I do peel the apples lol. Oh, Spunky, you don’t swing those contraptions around your head, silly. The salad spinner is actually a very efficient way of washing the lettuce. I did used to use one of those for romaine and leaf lettuce.

What is kind of scary is that many of the bugs that get into produce these days is not from the outside handling. It’s from the migrant workers using the fields as their washroom. Down into the dirt it goes, gets rained on, up into the plants. You can’t wash that out. Sorry.

I did all those things. My sister drank Clorox. I took egg sandwiches to school every day that sat in my locker until lunch with no refrigeration.

Coming home from the grocery store I’d eat strawberries I had just bought.

But when we lived in CA we’d drive the back roads between Simi Valley and Ventura often. It was through fields of vegetable and fruit crops being picked.

Never saw any kind of bathroom, or even a hint of a hand washing station. I started to re-think how I handled fresh food.
