Finally, a day with no plans!!!

At least not to leave the house. I have to start cleaning because I invited people over for a turkey dinner next week.

Be careful not to clean too soon, CB.

I’ve done that before and had to re-do it closer to the day lol.

How big’s the turkey?

“Often the forgiveness process should happen only after the dragon has been vanquished.”

I definitely agree with that!

I was referring to teaching children about forgiveness.

By the time we’re adults hopefully it’s possible to have developed a large degree of discipline over our reactions to the actions of others.

We still feel the pain but we don’t let that emotion control our reactions.

This development of the human person makes it possible for forgiving to be part of a loving and selfless approach to the world.

Living this lifestyle among our neighbors is what helps us to be sources of repentance and reconciliation and also to be approachable for those who are beginning to search for reconciliation.

Love has to start somewhere.

Love. Not justice.

I’m not speaking as a perfect person.

I’m speaking as a vastly imperfect and weak but determined person who tries, and who fails often.

Very often.

Just ask my husband.

On second thought, please don’t. 😂😂😂😂

CottonBall, the pursuit of Christ, of being Christ-like, is just too good, too filled with the highest, most profound beauty I’ve ever known, for me to approach half-heartedly, even when what’s required is hard to do or brings suffering.

I have to try.

Simply stated, I love Him.

Through Him all things are possible.

:-)

Much love to you, dear CottonBall.

What exactly are we/you forgiving? Can one REALLY forgive a murderer who shows NO real remorse?

.............

Well, I have 3 examples for you. Do you remember the Green River Killer near Seattle? There were 30 woman murdered by a serial killer, the police finally caught him. I think all were prostitutes so the were vulnerable. At trial he was expressionless, and when each family had a chance to say how he had destroyed their lives he was emotionless, until one man got up and said he forgave him, then he broke down and cried. So ya, forgiveness can break the most hardened heart.

Remember Stephen asked God to forgive them for they know not what they do as they were stoning him to death. And of course, Jesus saying the same thing prior to his death.

Actually forgiveness is the most powerful thing in the universe. Do what he says and let God work out the details, it is always better that way.

I have a harder time forgiving myself than anyone else.

.............

I hear ya, I have done that for years, I did some really stupid things and they would pop back in my head frequently. Finally one day I thought, God forgave my sins, so he is not reminding me, it is either me not believing God, or some other "spirit" that wants me to feel ashamed. So what I did was say to myself yup, I did that and I am so thankful that God loves me so much he forgave me. So my thinking was wrong previously and whatever it was that reminded me of the bad apparently didn't like that, ha , too bad for him. So in essence, when I have those bad thoughts it gives me a chance to thank God for helping me instead, a win win fer lil ol me.

Hey, I still screw up like y'all, but sometimes I have a chance to make it right, jus say'n

Forgiveness in these circumstances can only be the doing of God....it is truly amazing, and I would think would take a while to happen.

The thing I have noted over the years is that when I have apologized to people, or have had people apologize to me, there was not just willingness to forgive, but a happy eagerness. People are happy to bury the hatchet, at least that’s what I have usually found to be true.

Now I’m talking about the minor brush-ups, not something as horrific as the murder or even accidental death of a loved one.

During covid we had a little bit of a heated disagreement with a friend, and didn’t see him for awhile. He knocked on the door a few weeks ago and as soon as I saw him I apologized for the disagreement we had....he did the same thing. We laughed, hugged, and had a lovely visit and I know it’s gone. Nothing will ever be thought of again.

I can only conclude that an apology has as profound an effect on the human soul as forgiveness. They go hand in hand.

Another story....my daughter’s in-laws had always been rather unkind and snarky to my daughter, right from the age of 17 when they became high-school sweethearts. I think they wanted him to keep to his Dutch community (they’re very tight-knit) and we’re not Dutch. In any case, I watched her suffer for years, especially at the hands of the older sister-in-law. Very mean. My daughter has recently struggled for the first time with an emotional breakdown, and it’s been awful. While she was having such a difficult time, her and hubby and kids went to pay a visit to in-laws, because the mean sister-in-law was visiting from Indiana.

When they saw Natalie, they broke down crying. They said how sorry they were for all of their unkind treatment, asked her to please forgive them, and held her for the first time. She was overwhelmed with a sudden love for them, and the forgiveness was without question. They have been wonderful to her ever since.

As a mother, I held hardness in my heart toward them for what they had done to Natalie, but the moment she told me what had happened, it all left. Immediately. I never think an unkind thought about them and it’s like it’s all brand new.

Apologies and forgiveness are both extremely powerful. I guess that’s why our instructions for day-to-day living are:

1. If you brother sins against you, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him. Again, and again and again.

2. If he doesn’t listen, go to two or three others (witnesses) who can vouch for and validate the grievance to help correct the issue.

3. If he still doesn’t listen, go to the church to step in.

4. If he still doesn’t listen, I guess he gets a good old-fashioned Amish shunning lol. He’s to be treated as a pagan.

I guess it all sounds a little on the strict side, but the gist of it makes sense. I don’t really like the shunning part, it seems a bit cruel. Actually, it reminds me of the “silent treatment”.....very passive-aggressive, childish, and somewhat abusive, depending on the relationship.

That is perfect thinking, norsky!

Taking every thought captive to Christ. Throwing shame in your face, after you’ve been forgiven, is definitely from the enemy.

My spiritual advisor is the most positive person I know. It’s starting to rub off.
Drought ? He prays for rain and carries an umbrella. He’s the guy that carries a shovel cause he knows there is a pony in that pile of horse manure.

Some day i will get there.
