@RepThomasMassie
I condemn the barbaric attack on Israel and I affirm Israel’s right to defend itself.
However, I will not be voting for House Resolution 771 today because:
1) It calls for sanctions on a sovereign country. Sanctions are a prelude to war and hurt the citizens of the country more than the government of the country that’s being sanctioned. And ultimately, sanctions create laws that will be used to prosecute American citizens (who engage in trade), not citizens of the sanctioned country. In short, sanctions do not achieve their stated purposes but do breed resentment of our country abroad.
2) It asserts the necessity of foreign aid commitments which I have voted against. Our country is going bankrupt and we can’t afford to borrow money to send overseas, yet this resolution states that we should.
3) It contains an open-ended promise of military support that is so broad that it could be interpreted to commit US soldiers to the conflict. US troops should not be engaged in this conflict.
4) It tends to broaden the conflict to other countries when it would be better to keep the war contained geographically.
Here’s a link to the text of the resolution, which contains some statements I do support and some statements I cannot support.

Years ago, there was a congressional resolution to condemn some sunglasses-wearing, tin-pot. Dick Armey was the only “no” vote. I called his office to ask why? The reply was, “He already knows we do not like him. The vote was a waste of time.”
Hell, isn’t Valerie Jarrett at least part Iranian? Considering she’s the First Lady (FLOTUS) to Obama, Thomas Massie has a valid concern.
The “sovereign country” named in the resolution is Iran.
Massie upholds a rogue state whose primary war cry us “Death to America”. Seems to me to fall under the “aid and comfort” clause of Article 3 Section 3.
A “principled member” of congress.
WOW! It has been a long long time since I lived in a district that had a principled member. Most have been Go Along to Get Along Republicans or Democrats who just followed orders.
He wants the Iranian sanctions lifted?
We gave billions to Palestine, over the years, and they hate us. Israel gave a lot, too.
Sanctions do impact countries, and it should hurt them. Money flowing between countries does not assure good things will happen, and goods flowing can simply mean even more weapons will get made from gifted water supply parts.
If commerce is so important with countries, why not sell China and North Korea all of our best weapon systems? The more trade, the better!
“There is usually a reason.....”
Reason: nitwit.
Every one of his reasons for his decision is so terribly thought out and misinformed it is ridiculous. He needs to come out from his cave and enlighten himself on the possibilities of evil in the world. Evil prays on lack of action. And his reasons fall right in line with that. He has no concept. It’s like they took him off the farm with no radio, TV, or newspaper and put him in house to vote.
I’ve heard there are three types of people in the world:
Those that make things happen
Those that watch things happen
And those that sit around and ask what happened.
He covers at least one of these and it isn’t the first one.

I like what you posted.
So true…..
He’s the very best we have.
He’s probably right in his bite, and many here will be wishing more had taken the same stance - but it will be too late. I don’t think many here have considered what is likely to happen if the genie of regional war is released.
It’s a shame John McCain isn’t here to fan the flames. He’d sure be enjoying this, and maybe that would be enough for a few at least to recognize what’s happening and why. The Neocons who run our foreign policy are fiendishly insane. Just remember that when you see them leading the charge from their desks for what will be a regional then quickly a world war that we will not win. We are on the cusp of making a fatal mistake for Israel and for us and many, many others.
It’s a resolution, not a law, so he could have voted for it. Having said that, this is one of the major problems with Congress -— nearly every piece of legislation, even the good ones, is filled with measures that turn around and bite us in the behind. And they’re not unintended consequences, they’re MEANT to get bad stuff in through the back door. It’s connivance, duplicity and chicanery. And it’s despicable and evil.
In 2019 Trump sanctioned Turkey for participating in Syria-
10 days later they were lifted.
This was concrete proof that financial sanctions work expediently.
This guy’s positions of late have been highly questionable.
Probably been listening to his "pal", disgraced EX Congressman (and pro-Palestinian Hamas fanboy) Justin Amash too much. That's unfortunate. Just when I thought Massie had learned his lesson...
AMASH (whispers) : So listen pal, ya gotta vote down HR 771 and oppose apartheid Israel, then those Zionist pigs that expelled my Baba from the West Bank will DIE like the slime they are...
MASSIE: Ummm, Justin, the TV cameras are on you again...
AMASH: Whoops, did I say die? I meant... WHY we shouldn't support our GOOD BUDDY Israel is for purely CONSTITUTIONAL reasons, OF COURSE! I mean, I really really WANT to, but gosh darn it, as a PRINCIPLED constitutional conservative, we just can't! We gotta vote with Ilhan Omar on this one because the text that Thomas Jefferson wrote somehow FORCES us to!
You notice that the Biden gang’s puppet, Biden, is getting some bad press for urging a “humanitarian pause” in Gaza. But after a few months of media coverage of dead Gaza babies, public opinion could turn, and Biden would say, “See, I was right.” Biden doesn’t care, but he will pretend he does.
