"I’m so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better," she wrote in a statement.
Emily Blunt is addressing a recently resurfaced video from a 2012 talk show appearance where she can be heard using “insensitive” and “hurtful” language.
In the recently discovered YouTube clip from the U.K.’s Jonathan Ross Show, the Oppenheimer actress recalls going out to eat at a restaurant during her time filming Looper in the U.S. and then refers to a restaurant server as “enormous.”
Now, Blunt is apologizing in a statement shared with People magazine. “I just need to address this head on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12-years ago,” she wrote. “I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”
Her statement continued, “I’ve always considered myself someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for. And yet it happened, and I said it and I’m so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better.”
In the video circulating online, Blunt can be heard talking with host Jonathan Ross about one time when she ate dinner at a Chili’s restaurant while filming for the Rian Johnson-directed film. Ross proceeds to respond, “If you go to Chili’s you can see why so many of our American friends are enormous.”
Blunt added, “Well the girl who was serving me was enormous.” She also noted that the server recognized her while she was at the restaurant.
The Edge of Tomorrow actress starred alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Paul Dano in Looper, which was released in 2012.
Uh huh. You just are surprised it came out.
She gave in to the outrage crowd. Never give in to the outrage crowd!
I guess Emily was a little too ‘Blunt.’
Well, she’s Blunt.
The headline was a bit ambiguous. I tried to figure out what a “call server” is (is it like a hard-drive for a call center?) and why one would be enormous. Serves a lot of calls?
I would think “enormous” is better than “fat f**k”. THAT would have been blunt (but still accurate).
we've got to stop going back years and years and find some little tiny insult to throw at people....we've become so shallow and petty.
Apologizing isn’t necessarily bad.
But if she decides to grovel tomorrow, and apologize every day for the next 2 months, then she’s an idiot. You said it. You apologized. You’re done. Time to just walk away from this. No one really cares.
Emily Blunt is hot, and thus...not guilty.
It’s how the internet is used to keep people under control. It’s the Circuses part of Bread and Circuses.
Nothing wrong with apologizing for something you have done.
However judging folks entirely by their worst moments is a ludicrous thing as welll
Her character in “Sicario” is probably the most annoying irritating female character ever. Talk about a clueless idiot.
Pre-Woke.
Europeans that visit the states are shocked by our portion sizes, free soda refills, etc. As for her comment, “Enormous” is a lot more polite than fat, isn’t it?
There was a movie with the line, “Eat something! You’re going to waste away to enormous!”
Never heard of her.
oh please. get over it lady...she is a good actress, I have nothing against her...she doesn’t need to do this massive mea culpa.
Agreed. Not one of the Hollywood idiotsl. Also, maatt daaamon. Look it up.
