Florida teacher savagely beaten unconscious by 270lb autistic student after she told him to stop playing his Nintendo Switch REFUSES to back lighter sentence as he faces up to 30 years in prison

A Florida teacher who was beaten senseless by a 270 pound student has refused to support a lighter sentence for the teen.

High school teacher Joan Naydich was violently attacked by Brendan Depa, then 17, in February after she told him to stop playing on his Nintendo Switch.

The autistic teen was seen on video punching and kicking the educator in the back and head until she lay on the ground unconscious.

Eventually the 6-foot-6 teen, now 18, was pulled away and restrained by other staff.

Naydich, was taken to a local hospital and treated after the assault.

Depa, reportedly threatened to kill Naydich during his arrest.

Depa, was charged as an adult and faces up to 30 years in prison for the first-degree felony charge of aggravated battery.

The teen, who was initially charged as a juvenile before being upgraded to an adult, is set to plead guilty in an attempt to avoid jail time, the New York Post reported.

Naydich has 'shown no interest in mitigating what penalties Depa might face', according to news site Flagler Live.

Depa had three prior battery arrests before the February attack and has been in a prison fight just last month, the Post reported.

'I'm hopeful that the awareness of this incident being spread far and wide will prevent anyone else from ever dealing with the trauma, physical healing and disruption of everyday life this has caused,' she said on a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $100,000.

Depa is slated to issue his plea later month and will be sentenced after that in a separate proceeding.

Matanzas High School where the assault occurred has been beset with violence in recent years, the Post reported.

What kind of school is filled with these angry, virulent young students? As mentioned above, the very name of the school--Matanzas-- means "Killings" in Spanish.

Florida: 11 Matanzas High School Students Charged After Brawl

A deputy said a 17-year-old male student was arrested for felony battery on a school official after he charged at a school staff member and punched him. Another 17-year-old boy allegedly assaulted a school administrator as they were escorting a student away from the fight. The teen was arrested for disorderly conduct and felony battery on a school official

And that's only two of the many students rioting in the halls of Matanzas High School when they should be getting an education.

but if that’s not done, get a man or two to do that job. preferably one who played contact sports like football.

Yeah, ask one of the big, burly male teachers - who were recently passed over for promotion because of "equity!"

Sure, ask a victim of "reverse discrimination" if he's willing to "take one for the team" and provoke a confrontation with a 270-lb behemoth.

See how that works!

who said anything about ‘take one for the team?’

if you’re taking one for the team, as you say, you’ve already failed to control the situation, arrest the threat, and restore order. if you don’t have the ability to do that, without getting hurt yourself, as with that poor teacher, you shouldn’t be in the situation in the first place.

I sincerely believe that you have misunderstood me.

You initially proposed that, when the issue with the confiscated electronic toy arose, the female teacher should have requested help from her male colleagues - or maybe you meant that the school administration should simply delegate, as a matter of general policy, the task of restoring order, enforcing rules, or dealing with violent pupils to the male teachers (your posting was a little vague on that point).

But regardless as to whether you were referring to simply this one, specific incident or to a general policy according to which male teachers should always have to be the ones to intercede and deal with big, burly, surly male students - I disagree!

I therefore repeat: Why should any male teacher impacted by "reverse discrimination" or "DEI" voluntarily choose to "white-knight" an underpowered female teacher in distress?

*I suppose that there is a third possibility: That you meant that the school should hire a special category of security people - "Sergeants-at-Arms," if you will - whose sole duty is to maintain order. But then I submit to you that overarching leftist narratives would force the school to hire both big, burly men "who played contact sports" AND petite or overweight women. And then the female orderlies would constantly expect the male ones to intercede when it got dangerous.

well, i see you’re an argumentative sort and all over the place. didn’t realize my comment was so controversial.

anyway, your tiny font third alternative is perhaps closer to the mark of what i assumed would be the situation in a well managed school, and is exactly what we had when i was in school back in the 70’s.

i’m not going to argue further, except to rephrase my original comment for others watching the thread, which i continue stand by, not withstanding your disagreement.

1. my first thought is that the school made it’s first mistake when it allowed any electronics in the first place.

2. the second thing i’ll repeat from my initial comment is that the woman made the 2nd mistake (which was proved out with her being hurt) and shouldn’t have made the demand in the first place, because she was incapable of enforcing it with a teen who could overpower her. (i don’t know why she didn’t realize that the teen could overpower her, or could fly into a rage given the punishment. perhaps she was a bit inexperienced in the classroom.)

anyway, if the electronics had to be confiscated, she should have called in men who could handle the situation, by controlling it. no average sized woman could possible control a boy that size without potentially lethal force. you obviously don’t want to deploy lethal force in that situation. you’re dealing with an out of control teen, who without a weapon wouldn’t be a threat to someone of greater experience, training, strength and agility.

well, have the last word if you want. i’m done.

If it’s true then, the more it happens the more it shows that even if you’re a liberal, liberalism is not necessarily your friend. Would it also go to show how lib-on-lib crime looks a lot like black-on-black crime when you look at the data? On the other hand though, with black-on-black crime, the perps usually know the skin color of the victim(s).

“I need a go fund me page to beg money from people out there. If I have a good enough story, people will pay me lots of money.”

If your GoFundMe is very successful, you’ll be expected to “give back to the community”.

well, i see you’re an argumentative sort and all over the place. didn’t realize my comment was so controversial.

I wasn't being "argumentative" here. I simply took your comment (which I wouldn't characterize as "controversial" - but rather simply as "short-sighted" and/or as "naive") seriously, and tried to respond in an analytical, thoughtful, respectful, and structured manner.

Did you really take offense at that?

well, have the last word if you want. i’m done.

You're very generous!

Your latest comments are not per se wrong - though thank you for clarifying your actual position! - but are based on a far too optimistic and realistic mind-set.

I suspect here that the school is already hopelessly "woke," and that the political climate wouldn't allow for the implementation of any of the "improvements" you suggest - or, if implemented, would probably backfire.

Indeed, if you, as a parent, were to show up at a Town Hall open-mic assembly or P.T.A. meeting and lay out your proposals, you'd probably get shouted down, booed at, decried as a ray-cist, or cut off by the podium.

(To be clear: This assessment of mine is not of the specific school district at hand, but of the general atmosphere in America.)

Given the current leftist climate, I doubt that your well-meaning recommendation that a troop of security guards or orderlies or however you want to describe them would "pan out." As already stated, leftist forces would emasculate any such security measures and/or male coworkers would be unfairly be expected to bear the brunt (and then they would probably be castigated subsequently on account of "unnecessary brutality" and "toxic masculinity").

I see this incident as merely a reflection of a bigger problem already rampant across America, and expressed most clearly in the anti-police sentiment sweeping across the nation.

I therefore continue to stand by my assessment that expecting male personnel to "leap into the breech" and compensate for 98-lb female teachers unable to "cash the checks that their mouths write" would be inherently unfair. I stand by my characterization that this would be tantamount to demanding that the male personnel - already suffering from "reverse discrimination" and "DEI" - "take one for the team" or "fall on their swords."

Yes, in a perfect world, an experienced and confident 98-lb female teacher would have had recourse to better options. But that is delusional given current conditions.

“Autism” has been widely expanded to include even minor discomfort with change. This does help people who do genuinely have Autism be recognized as such and receive assistance where needed, but it also blankets people who don’t truly have Autism, and who simply exhibit some behaviors commonly associated with it. This sounds as if it may be that, but if he is Autistic, those behaviors should have been mitigated at a much younger age. It’ll be nearly impossible to break them now that he’s an adult.

Exactly. Why does she need a go fund me page?

Doing a search of her name, she is a Teacher's Aide, not a teacher. This was one of two jobs she held to support her children. Workman's Comp was giving her a hard time. Benefits virtually nil for Para-professionals in Florida, along with an average yearly salary of about $28k.

Kid doesn’t sound very autistic.

My wife says half the special needs students are the result of poor parenting rather than any inborn disability.

Some diagnosed autistic need the manpower that large institutes provided to contain their violence. Not classroom or group homes

Prediction. Within 10 years these diagnosises will be killed by the states.

Actually a very big deal psych hospital forces their physically abused staff TO USE UP THEIR VACATION AND SICK TIME FIRST BEFORE ANY OTHER SUPPORTS KICK IN. STAFF WILL COME IN WITH BROKEN AND SPRAINED PARTS BECAUSE THEY NEED THEIR TIME OFF.

I drove a short bus for several years.

My general observation is that many parents put their kids in the program for the door-to-door transportation (primarily).

Agreed. If he was really autistic, he would be in a special needs facility instead of a prison. Behavior problems sttemming from lack of discipline have been passed off as special needs cases for years because you can use that to make the problem someone else’s.

When I was a kid, the people that lived across the street from us had a nephew that came to visit. We were told to “be nice to him, because he has hyperactivity disorder.” Well to us kids, he just struck us as being a spoiled rotten brat. After the second time of his throwing a tantrum, several of us kids gave him an attitude adjustment that came with a free black-eye and busted lip. He came back the next day and acted like a different kid. We allowed him to play with us for the rest of his visit. We parted as friends.

Sometimes you just have to call someone out on their behavior and, if they choose to continue with the same, you adjust adjust it for them.

We need to know more information about his history. Autistic people do explode when things are taken away. I saw my autistic nephew put his head through a glass table. Is he truly autistic or is he just a pink?
