My safest is Double action only 5 shot
.357 with no hammer spur so it doesn’t
Get caught up in anything and it can also shoot .38 s’ to lessen recoil.
Ruger has a .22 that is Great called an LCR which is about as simple as it gets.

Modern Lithium ion batteries make it more practical. Still they are pneumatic.
Someone mentioned rail rifles, that requires huges amounts of AC power.
Possibly someday there will be a laser rifle.

The so-called Rail Gun is powered by electromagnetic energy (EMF). But, it’s ridiculously expensive (from a physics standpoint) to operate. DoD may have other prototypes that work better, but no idea how practical they are at this point.
There are phased plasma rifles in the 40 watt range....
