Is there any such thing as an electric powered gun? Or are they all mechanical? Curious

Hi.

I have an electric powered rail gun.

I developed the prototype at Dalgren, Va.

It’s an amazing weapon. We can hit any targets in RU from the Med.

Fwiw.

5.56mm

This "rail gun projectile" contains explosives!

LOL! Good one!

This might be more than you're looking for.

There are hand held electromagnetic rail guns that are under development. Some are even for sale. At the moment they are a novelty.

However, as more and more gun control laws keep getting crazier and crazier there will come a time when these rail guns totally destroy gun control laws.

Almost all firearms are defined as a device where an explosive gas propels a projectile out of the firearm. A rail gun does not use any form of burning powder to create a gas that propels the bullet from the firearm.

So not only will a semi-automatic or select-fire rail gun not be considered a firearm (it might be a destructive device though) those gun grabbers who want to tax “ammunition” will be hard pressed to tax just pieces of metal.

Alternative: a primer designed to be triggered by electricity. Problems: (1) again more complexity which means (2) costs more.

So while they do exist, they simply are not practical compared to good old mechanical firing mechanisms.

There are magnetic rail guns that basically just throw slugs of metal with no need for propellant. But they require a whole lot of power, so they aren’t practical for personal defense weapons at this time.

Correct, they are not electrically fired; they are mechanically fired through a firing pin to a primer.

They are electrically fired. These weapons do not have firing pins. The have firing contacts. Energized through an electrical connection, the contact touches the primary as it cycles past and initiates it. Release the trigger and the contact is de-energized.

Look up rail gun. It could launch a projectile 27 miles if I remember correctly. I think the navy an electric catapult to launch planes. They are electromagnetic. Are you also referring to direct energy. weapons?

I can tell you that if you make any projectile weapon without a trigger that the ATF will ask you uncomfortable questions about it over a very long period of time.

I’ve watched YouTube videos with modern air guns. Those things are beasts.

primary

I don't know why my useless spell check keeps changing primer to primary.

Pneumatic rifles were invented long long ago.

That's what Lewis and Clark took on their expedition.

They exist. But they are at just past the "iron tube tied to a rake handle and tucked under your arm" stage when compared to firearms.

I was working on a prototype electrically fired semi auto pistol that fired the primer with an electric charge. The battery source was in the magazine. But I found that the connection between the magazine / battery pack was subject to dirt and residue and therefore unreliable for life critical use.

The concept was that a gun that could be completely turned off and thus rendered safe, and a trigger pull that was infinitely adjustable. But I could never get the battery source 100% reliable, water disabled it, and a battery pack hard wired in the inside of the weapon would have been too complicated to replace.

The devil, as they say, is in the details!
