go to palmetto state armory and get a perfectly good home defense AR15 pattern rifle for about 1/2 of that and spend the rest on ammo and training

I have both and I'd use the AR for defense against a killing mob. Get extra magazines for quick reloading. The Israelis who could fight back generally use AR's.

For home defense, Shotgun with #4 Buckshot. It will destroy anybody or thing in front of it up to 25” away, and you won’t have to worry about it killing your neighbors when any of the pellets go through your wall.
By now, I think you get the point...two different tools for two different jobs. Not an either, or, situation...
you need both.
If you are only permitted one, I think the fundamental question should be this: Which scenario is more likely in the first place, a single home intruder or an attacking mob?
That should settle the issue.

What worries me about shotguns indoors is hearing damage. OTOH, better than being dead, I suppose.
Remember that a million people have come across our southern border. They are virtually all military aged men. Yes some women and children are there as well. But very few as compared to the men. They have been shipped to the large cities and they come from every part of the world. Now the vast majority are not from Mexico. They are from all parts of the world, China, The Middle East, Africa. They can be an Army. They can be an invading force. They can work against us if a future force attacks us. Or if the force attacks one of our friends.
They are trying very hard to disarm us. They are trying very hard to leave open our border. They are trying very hard to keep them out of jails even when they commit heinous crimes.
What happened in Israel can happen here. We have all the ingredients. There just has to be a plan. They can go slowly by striking in El Paso or Tuscon. Or they can strike big by attacking in all the big cities at once. The media will not be on our side. Our government will not be on our side. They could do it here and now.
Always use the right tool for the job.
In general, a shotgun is excellent for home defense against just a couple of home invaders. Less over-penetration and chance of involving your neighbors... while properly sending the bad guys to face their eternal reward.
For actions against an invading force... Buy what you can afford to shoot accurately and use in your AO. If a .30 cal variant, be it a 7.62x39 or .300 Blackout, sounds good to you... go for it. A .223/5.56 will also get the job done and is generally lighter and marginally cheaper.
Also... consider your pistol options as well. Smaller armaments like this can help with “sudden Jihad syndrome” and other pop-up predators.
There are as many articles and opinions as there are people to give them. Find what works for YOU and your budget... but find SOMETHING.
Worrying about it when they kick in your door is FAR too late...
If you get really familiar with the AR then you will be able to rapidly engage many targets and you also have the advantage of getting penetration through the kind of things people hide behind around American homes, you also get the ability to engage out to a longer distance if that arose.
For me the big advantage is 30 shots with quick reload and the ability to shoot, aim at the next, shoot, aim at the next, and do that as much as you can against what won’t be professional soldiers.
With 30-round magazines ready to go you can throw a lot of lead at them instantly, giving them confusing suppressive fire which can disrupt their nice mental picture of how they were going to proceed in handling your house.
