A black soldier fly, or Hermetia illucens is a common and widespread fly of the family Stratiomyidae.

I have a lot of them in my composting tumbler and they are great at breaking down kitchen wastes. That is why I want them. My neighbor has chickens, and I suspect that she would like to feed them to her chickens. (And get eggs in return!)
One of the numerous reasons I never buy prepared anything except occasional sauerkraut.
