New York socialists calling for higher taxes aim to spread the tax net far beyond Wall Street, scooping up folks on Main Street—especially in the suburbs.
Bemoaning “violent budget cuts” at New York City agencies, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her ideological allies are calling on the city and state to “fund resources for all New Yorkers” by raising taxes on the top 5% of New Yorkers. Considering the left’s prior focus on “the 1%,” this is a major development.
The top 1% of New Yorkers begins just south of $1 million in adjusted gross income. But the top 5% begins a little above $250,000—translating into married couples making $127,000 each.
More than 168,000 New York state and local government employees were paid more than $127,000 last year. Forty-five New York school districts paid most of their teachers and administrators at least that much, and about 70 police or fire departments had mean pay above that line.
The move from targeting the top 1% to the top 5% is a recognition that the socialist program, to borrow from Margaret Thatcher, risks running out of other people’s money.

Trust me, the “threshold” will be much lower than this.
New York is the place to be, for being robbed, killed or harmed. No wonder why the Douglass left for HOOTERVILLE.
Why do rich people of power have to equate themselves with financial assets to be secure? There is so much more than just money. They are defining wealth, not rich. They are so small in life.

Hey — if that is what it costs to fund your nanny state, then pony up!
“More than 168,000 New York state and local government employees were paid more than $127,000”
Wow!, no wonder they are broke.
Believe it or not, $127,000 is not that much money in NYC. With that you can afford what would be considered a middle class life in most of the rest of the country - not more than that.
To a Leftist, rich is defined as anyone who has more money than they do.
Socialism is an ideology based on envy.
If the NY court is successful in redefining how taxes are collected by making the ‘assessed value’, (determined by the City and State with no actual appraisal valuation) equal to the fair market value, then they can lower the tax rate drastically, but increasing the values exponentially, so that taxes will be raised but the claim will be that they ‘lowered’ taxes. Real Estate taxes have always been political, especially in New York.
They can always find someone worse off than you to justify taking everything you have.
WE ran out of 'other people's money' a long time ago. The Feds collect $4 trillion a year and spend $7 trillion.
Why tax anyone at all when the government spends to whatever excess that it chooses? Ergo, the current tax scheme is
only for exercising the "power to destroy."
To a socialist, a rich person is anyone making more money than they do. A poor person is anyone making less. It’s a sliding scale based on your financial position. That’s part of how socialists create class envy.
Capitalism - The rich become powerful
Socialism - The powerful become rich
And AOC certainly has gotten rich since coming to DC.
Deep State’s definition of rich: Anyone drawing a private sector paycheck.
Democrats have better rhetoric. AOC uses the term
“violent budget cuts”
Republicans should use the term “violent tax increases”.
The “Rich” are all those not poor.
“To a Leftist, rich is defined as anyone who has more money than they do.”
Many in the Left are rich themselves. They just use the term “rich” because it is a convenient cover for their taxes. They know lots of voters are envious of people with more money than themselves.
The Left NEED lots of money to fuel their socialism. Rich, middle class, poor. No matter. Cough it up for the collective.
Eighteen months ago I moved to Hooterville. It's nice to no be living in the shooting gallery of America's major and minor cities.
