Two people and their dog were found dead at Banff National Park on Saturday after a grizzly bear attack.

A GPS device alerted Parks Canada on Friday night, indicating a bear attack was happening within the Red Deer River Valley region west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch in Canada’s Banff National Park... Due to poor weather conditions, an emergency team reportedly could not fly to the location via helicopter, so they traveled by ground during the night.

When the team arrived at the scene, they reportedly found two individuals who were deceased and ... The victim’s identities have not been released... Their family dog was also killed during the attack.

...

“They lived for being in the backcountry and were two of the most cautious people I know. They knew bear protocol and followed it to a tee,”

...

The bear responsible for the attack was later found and euthanized after it continued to display aggressive behaviors, Parks Canada said

Yes, that’s a good joke. But in reality a bear, like a dog, is more likely to chase the person still running than to stop for the fallen one.

No! The question is why didn’t one of them fire the .454 Casull at the bear?

Their last words:

"Wild Animal!"

"Yeah, I know!"

"Wild Animal!"

"I'm gonna go for it, Honey!"

Didn’t say that. Say goodbye to the dog, but he should keep the bear off of you long enough to escape.

Big bore revolvers. Minimum 44 magnum and preferably 454 Casul.

Revolvers are so 20th century when it comes to bear protection. In Alaska the Glock 20 loaded with Buffalo Bore 220 gr is the go-to firearm for bear protection.

The Glock 20 is what most Alaskan guides now carry, as well as by those who are familiar with pistols. And the idea is to neutralize the bear before he/she/they get to you. Revolvers are generally carried by those 75 and older who might get one round off before being taken out by the bear.

My manager was retiring & moving to Colorado. Her family was big into mountain hiking and her son & husband wanted to buy a gun. Was surprised with all their vacations to Colorado they never had one bt now that they were going to live on the side of a mountain, they wanted one. She asked me because she knew I hunted deer. Told her I always carried my .40 during muzzleloader season due to the sightings of mountain lions where I hunted & I wanted more then one shot if I ran into one on my way to my deer stand. I also ran into other idiot hunters who didn’t have permission to hunt on the land I hunted on.

Nice piece.
I CCW daily a 2009 Kimber 1911 .45cal ACP 5” “Target Eclipse II”, w/ 230gr HPs & FMJs in an 8-rnd Wilson Combat stainless mag, and a Galco 2-mag paddle holster w/ 2 extra WC mags. Works for me.

Followed bear protocols to a tee…
What does this say about “official” bear protocols?
Maybe this indicates conventional policies regarding personal protection from bears is somewhat flawed and ineffective?

Bears run much, much faster than both people and dogs.
