Criminals are using artificial intelligence technology in a scary new AI scam, but knowing the red flags can help you avoid becoming their next victim
Picture this: You answer a phone call one day and hear a voice that sounds like your child. They tell you that they have been kidnapped and need cash for a ransom right away. You scramble to help—only to realize that the voice on the other end of the line isn’t your child but rather part of a sophisticated, terrifying new AI scam phone call.

“This AI stuff is going to get really bad.”
Agreed. Right now we have dims trying to refute proven facts and create falsehoods in plain sight with plenty of conservative voices pointing this out. Much of the time when that fails they simply try to muddy the waters.
Imagine how muddy it will get with bad guys working AI to this end.
I’ve read plenty of dystopian novels. Looks like I stayed around long enough to start participating.
My son and I both got different voicemail recordings from a guy claiming that we had jumped bail and they were going to have somebody at the door real soon. It was spooky and upsetting. Then we noticed lots of odd things in the messages. They were left by a black guy with a bad case of mush-mouth. There were gaps in the recording where a docket number was supposed to be inserted. No jurisdiction or court was mentioned. The guys name was unintelligible. We both ignored it. I think one of us got a second call. Fortunately, it never got close to sending money.
My 88 year old Mother who is blind has gotten several calls recently from some woman demanding to know her Driver’s licence as she claims that my Mother been involved in a number of wrecks..Kinda hard when you do not have keys are can’t see.
I hate these bastards who prey on the elderly.
I’m 72 and, while we are both in good shape mentally, you never know how things will go.
I admit, I thought it was real. I still think it was awesome and someone, if not Rand himself, should have done something similar in protest of Schumer’s actions to Fetterman could come in looking like a slob. No longer necessary, but during the window it would have been totally appropriate.
I wish there was a way to find these scammers, dispatch hit squads to wipe them out and burn everything they own to the ground. They prey on the old, wreck their lives and those that depend on them. The only way to stop it is to exterminate them like the vermin they are.

There is at least a way to find them. There are folks on YouTube called scam baiters. They connect to the scammers by telephone or computer, and pretend to be an easy mark.
These scam baiters are often able to destroy the scammer’s computer files. Some will call-flood the scammer’s place of business. Call-flooding prevents the scammers from calling out, and swindling anyone else.
It would seem that our federal government could easily do the same, but on a much larger scale. But for some reason they don’t. Maybe they just don’t care if the little people get hurt.
I don't answer my phone anymore unless it's from someone already in my Contacts list. Others can leave a voicemail.
It is a good topic.
On Patrol Live had a hilarious incident where a guy was called on a cell phone and told his girl friend had been kidnapped and a ransom was needed.
He was a little suspicious because it turned out he had never actually met the woman in person.
The whole thing was a setup—the “girlfriend” was probably a picture that did not even match the name.
The old cliche was “nothing good happens after midnight”.
The new one: “nothing good happens on the telephone”.

I’m glad this wasn’t around when my sisters were teenagers. They used to go to places Ike Rodeo Drive and take pictures pretending to be opening a Jaguar, Maserati, etc. Imagine the size of that ransom demand.
As others have noted, we do not answer calls we are not sure about. We do not receive many spam calls. One of the few we have received is hilarious. A very official voice begins with “there is nothing wrong with your Social Security account.....however......”
Many, many moons ago, I received one of those emails versions of the Nigerian bank scam. “A large amount of money has been found that was left to you, but we need a little money, bank info, etc.” This was at work. We had pretty good spam filters, but nothing is perfect. Besides the obvious scam, I could tell from the email and website addresses that it was from Europe. I decided to have a little fun. I took some time to compose a response. I said something like this: “Thank you very much. I look forward to working with you. In order to establish the veracity of this communication, please have FedEx overnight $5,000 in gold bullion. Once I have received and authenticated the gold, we can talk further.”
The idiots actually responded with: “I know understand you.” I responded with:
“No kidding Dick Tracy.”
DING DING DING and the winner is.......kiryandil. that was one of the first movies I ever saw where the bad guy got away.
I’ve watched those videos. There needs to be a more severe and permanent punishment.
The goverment will only care if it affects them. We, the people are like livestock to them.
