Criminals are using artificial intelligence technology in a scary new AI scam, but knowing the red flags can help you avoid becoming their next victim
Picture this: You answer a phone call one day and hear a voice that sounds like your child. They tell you that they have been kidnapped and need cash for a ransom right away. You scramble to help—only to realize that the voice on the other end of the line isn’t your child but rather part of a sophisticated, terrifying new AI scam phone call.

So I thought it was worth a post.
This is awful.
One question. How in the world would the scammers get enough voice samples from your child to make a convincing deep fake voice recording?

Evidently the AI programs are now so good that only a few seconds of a voice recording would be needed. That’s what the article mentioned, anyway.
This AI stuff is going to get really bad.
Like this.
Just this morning on another thread, people on this site thought it was real. It wasn’t.
If I got a call like this it would upset me greatly as I don’t have any kids.
I had a brother in law that used to call my sister a lot and tell her not to pay the ransom that he would escape.
Wow, that’s really bad news.
I remember reading years ago that scammers are collecting voice samples via junk calls. They get people to answer and talk. I became very suspicious and now, whenever I feel I have to answer a call from an unknown number, I don’t even say “hello” — I let the other person talk first and identify themselves.
My father in law got took for 30000 in one of these. Everybody needs an authentication word. The modern day proof of life so to speak. One example is Afghanistan banana stand. (Extra points to anybody who can name the movie that came from)

These kinds of scams require a little planning on the part of the scammers. First, they’ve got to find a target with a child or grandchild. I suppose that’s doable with Facebook, etc.
Get a voice sample of the child or grandchild be calling them directly. Then let the AI do the rest.
Answering machines. Videos people post on social media. Enough ways to get plenty of audio.
Ever hear of TikTok?
AI generated phone scammers living in the cloud. Take your best scammer reading the best scam script. Put him in an AI generator. Multiply by 10,000 and let er rip. The future sucks.

The federal government has the resources to put a man on the Moon. Yet it evidently doesn’t have the resources to electronically counter-strike these criminals.
” i always liked your brother better”
Authentication word:
“Scammers”
;-)
Good points. Also Facebook photos and videos. Now you have “shorts” on YouTube to compete with TikTok.
Everybody wants their 15 minutes of fame and they aren’t afraid to put anything and everything out on the net. I’ve always been extremely wary of that to the point you won’t find much information about me or my family.
Actually, a person calls and says “grandad/grandma, this is x.c.x and I got into an accident and need money”. The voice sounds funny and he says “I smashed my nose” and things go down hill from there. HANG UP.
I have received several calls of the”Grampa! I need help!” All scams and a few questions will show them to be the scammers they are.
I’ve always been extremely wary of that to the point you won’t find much information about me or my family.

You can try, but it is out there. Even if you or your family do not post, your relatives and or your children’s friends post.
It is like DNA, you may not take the test and register with a genealogy site but one of your relatives might. The police are using various genealogy sites as a data base to find people who are a close match to who they are looking for.
Privacy is no longer possible.
I truly miss life as it was before computers.
People are not smart anymore and will buy into anything..Recently a man in my area got a call from someone claiming to be a bail bondsman saying his grandson was in jail in Dallas TX and needed $5000 get out and he needed to wire the money to him...luck to have it he told his neighbor he was going to local Walgreens to wire the money and this neighbor had the sense to call his daughter in a nearby city what he was doing and she has just spoke with her Son and so she called the Police to intercept them which they were able to and stop the fraud.
