Big banks predict junk food giants to lose BILLIONS over next decade as Wegovy and Ozempic sap nation's sweet tooth

Two-thirds of people on weight-loss drugs ate fewer cookies and salty snacks Brands at risk of losing business include Oreo, Taco Bell, Burger King and Jell-O

The rise of weight-loss drugs isn't only shrinking Americans' waistlines, it could also shrink food corporations' bottom lines.

Some experts predict junk food companies - already battling a rise in health conscious customers - could face a tobacco-like demise due to drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which reduce cravings and make people feel full longer.

Big banks, such as Morgan Stanley, predict 24 million people, or seven percent of the US population, will be taking weight-loss drugs by 2035.

An analysis by the bank also predicts patients prescribed the drugs will consume one-quarter of the candy, confectionary and other junk food they did before - slashing billions of dollars from annual revenue.

And corporations are already spooked. A recent analysis found executives at junk food companies are increasingly talking about the medications with investors.

Morgan Stanley’s food analyst Pamela Kaufman said in a report: 'The food, beverage and restaurant industries could see softer demand, particularly for unhealthier foods and high-fat, sweet and salty options.'

The new class of medications can lead to a 20 to 30 percent reduction in daily calories, and people tend to eat less high-sugar and high-fat foods, meaning the makers of chips, cookies and baked goods could take a hit, with banks predicting a drop in consumption by as much as three percent through 2035.

While any negative impacts are likely to be gradual, investors and c-suite executives have already begun to worry.

Reuters' Breakingviews scoured the transcripts of corporations' presentations, events and earnings calls, which is a conference between the management of a company, financial analysts, media and investors.

Sheesh. I was at my cardiologist today, routine follow up. Everything is normal, actually best its been in years.

Cardiologist suggested I take Wygovi because it will help heart function and maybe he can take me off the meds I am on now that are working great. I was confounded. He went on to say it also help reduce cravings, though I am not sure what I crave that I would reduced :-) I said the meds I am on seem to be working great why would you want to switch me to a diabetes med? He said it is shown to improve heart function; to which I replied “makes sense. Obese people’s hearts have to work harder. If they lose weight their hearts will work better. It’s probably not the drug that’s helping but the result of the weight loss”.

Maybe he was being polite in suggesting I drop a few pounds. I am not obese, not even fat really but sure I’d like to get back to my college weight. And maybe if I did drop a few pounds I could take less or lower doses of meds. But I guess all the “don’t fat-shame people” stuff is history. Now it’s shame them into taking prescriptions.

I guess it’s better to shrink my stomach now, before the mandatory bug eating laws come into effect.

Yeah, I have a sweet tooth. I crave chewy candies and hard candies. I solve that problem by not buying them. I buy celery and carrots assorted unsalted nuts and seeds and make my own mix.

“Wegovy and Ozempic cost about $1000 per month”

Whoa. A grand a month? Remember when young women in the ‘70s and ‘80s lost weight by going a diet of TaB and cigarettes? Not that it was healthier (it wssn’t), but it was likely equally effective and far cheaper.

I can’t believe that doctors are pushing these drugs as well as Bariatric surgery! I listen to these doctors on SiriusXM satellite radio, channel 110.

I realize the docs feel very frustrated because of the fast growing obesity problem in US...even among our children. But to push drugs! and surgery! when the problem is sugar and processed foods. I walk through the grocery stores and notice the aisles and aisles of processed food. All have sugar added. Plus people eat all the time 3 meals a day, and snacks between meals. Constant eating.

Research the food industry esp sugar industry ie what changes have been made in our food since 1970. Food is so refined! ...so that we will eat more. Plus many of the medical folks like dieticians don’t mention that sugar as well as sugar substitutes are highly addictive.

I listen to doctors on YouTube who are discouraged about the medical profession. One that I can think of is Dr Suneel Dhand. He has yrs of clinical experience in UK and now US. He reviews the flaws of research done.

Pls research. We need to change these industries, and the way we eat, what we eat. People are so fat. What are we doing to ourselves???

Yes, but the temptation is always there. It’s always best to keep them out of the house.

Substituting fruit or nuts as a snack is very satisfying option. It has been a big part of me losing the weight.

The headline might be true if food supplies were to remain constant, but food shortages may be showing up at any time. The third horseman of the Apocalypse is Famine and is due.

And...as marijuana laws are loosened nationwide, appetites for junk food will increase. So, there’s that.
