Some Millennials Ditch Dating App Culture in Favor of Returning to 'IRL' Connections

3-in-10 US adults say they've used a dating site or app: Pew Research

More than a decade since the launch of dating apps, they have become unavoidable players in the modern dating game.

In the U.S., 3 in 10 adults say they have used a dating site or app, and 1 in 10 partnered adults say they met their current significant other through a dating site or app, according to a 2022 Pew Research survey.

But some millennials are ditching dating app culture in favor of returning to what is known in internet speak as IRL, or "in real life."

To get a clearer picture of what today's singles are up against, ABC News' Alex Perez sat down with four single people – CeeJaye, Alex, Kara and JT. The discussion participants asked not to use their last names because of privacy concerns.

"I'm in that generation of, I was born before the internet. I remember meeting someone off of an app or a chat room. You know, just any kind of online meeting was very, very risky and scary. So there's certain things that I just pretty much prefer to do, you know, the in real life thing," CeeJaye, 38, said.

Alex, who is queer, believes apps have a place for niche communities – including LGBTQ people who live in rural or religious communities.

"I came from a small town where it's not the safest to be like going up to strangers and be like, 'You're hot, let's go out,'" Alex, 30, said.

Kara, 34, says she entered the dating sphere when she was 27 after being in a relationship for the majority of her 20s.

"The apps was what everyone was on, so I was like, "OK, that's what I got to do,'" Kara said.

Dating app culture?

Just think, all previous generations somehow met and married before the internet and cell phones were invented. They all met somehow in real life. What a concept to return to......

Some how people figured this out a long time ago.
Might not've been as suave & sophisticated, but it worked.

“Kara, 34, says she entered the dating sphere when she was 27 after being in a relationship for the majority of her 20s.“

Boy do I remember meeting these girls. I’d get to the point where if I heard “my ex” on more time my head was gonna explode. There was REAL anger in there. 27 years old seems young enough to me now but these young women, by 27, had been in a long term relationship for 3 or 4 or 5 years that they’d thought would result in marriage. Many of them seemed to have been dumped by a guy their own age for a marriage minded 22 or 23 year old.

Marriage requires a degree of humility and compromise.

If you think you are the center of the universe, if everything is all about you and if you need to win every argument, and always get your way, then marriage is not going to work out for you.

From what I see, the vast majority of young people are basically narcissists. Just not going to work out.

Where did guys most often meet girls? In college and at work.

I met my wife at work. I was a young manager, she was an administrative assistant.

Feminists have been busy making it hazardous to your future to date in these environments.

Only after she's ready.

It worked for my son. He advertised that he was a heterosexual, conservative, Christian male looking for a traditional conservative Christian female for committed relationship culminating in marriage. Posted picks and Trump gear.

Eight days later, he met his future wife. Pretty little thing with long blond hair, bright eyes, a wicked sense of humor, and who knew how to cook. Conservative Christian girls looking for a traditional man still exist in this world.

They got married in January.

Yes. He signed up on a dating app and met a sweet girl from our area. He was honest about what he wanted in a wife and didn’t get discouraged that he wasn’t getting tons of hits or likes. He was more focused on college, his guitar, working out, learning his fourth language (German), his job, and serving as the Vice President of his campus Young Republicans. He wanted to find someone but he didn’t need to find someone.

He was not simp material.

He trusted that God would bring his wife into his life. It would happen when it was meant to happen.

And God did...eight days later.

She was no fool, either. She locked my son down quickly and got him to the altar in record time (engaged at a year, married at two).

They are evenly matched right now, both making decent money, and will build a good life together.

Meanwhile, her friends are shocked that she’s already married while they are still going out clubbing and acting all “boss babe.” She has no interest in that life; she’s content cuddling up with him at home.

To each his own, as they say.
