Ron DeSantis is the better man. But the nomination now belongs to Donald Trump
09/08/2023 | Drew68

Posted on 09/08/2023 9:20:57 PM PDT by Drew68

It is highly unlikely that Governor DeSantis will win the GOP nomination. The recent Wall Street Journal poll has cemented this into my head.

Yet, I'm sticking with DeSantis until he's out of the race, whether that be on Election Day (unlikely) or he ends his campaign during the primaries (as of now, quite likely).

I'm sticking with him because nobody else has the record of conservative accomplishments and stalwart executive leadership that he has repeatedly demonstrated. I look for action, not words.

This being said, Governor DeSantis has showed himself to be poor campaigner. He just can't close the deal. And as much as I enjoyed the victories, I think his "war on woke" has hurt him.

The best chance he has now is to pivot to economic issues, which are Trump's strong points (at least for the first three years of his administration). But Florida has a booming economy as well, with a record $22 billion surplus last year.

This pivot will be a long shot and is unlikely to be successful because he would be going up against President Trump's strongest attributes.

This will be an election on the economy and when gas prices at the pump exceed $6-7/gallon next year (and I believe they will), Trump will remind us all that we were paying under $2/gallon for much of his first term. This is going to be a big selling point. If Trump screwed up everything in 2020, he had a booming economy with plenty of jobs and low interest rates prior to that. This can't be denied.

I am resigning myself to the reality that the primaries are essentially over and Trump will be the GOP nominee. And if he is, I will vote for Trump because at the end of the day, Trump is better than Biden. Hell, Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, Tim Scott, and Vivek Ramaswamy are better than Biden!

It's a shame though. GOP primary voters would rather be led by a cult of personality than a true executive leader with a record of accomplishments. It is what it is though.

I hope Trump can pull it off. His victory will depend on Biden voters staying home.

I hope that Trump can learn from his many mistakes and not repeat them.

I hope Trump can reconcile his disastrous record on COVID.

I hope that Trump can beat back against the myriad of unjust charges that he is currently facing.

Still, Ron DeSantis is the leader that Trump tries to be and that's the truth.

And when he keeps bashing DeSantis with lies, it only shows Trump as the sad, little man that he has become. He should as of now, stop being be this sad, little man.

I hope Trump can rise above this. As of now, he will earn my vote, but he needs to become a better man.

It seems to me like Ron D is just Trump lite…. Thats why his campaign is stuck in the mud. Ethically and philosophically they’re the same…. Trump however is a business man and outsider and DeSantis for all intents and purposes is not. He is establishments version of Trump. People are sick of the establishment.

Weak demeanor is so stupid, frankly. This is used in place of an argument. People here are so easily gulled.

” I think that the 4 indictments have won Trump an impenetrable sympathy vote among Republican voters”

-— It’s not just sympathy. If the “deep state” gets away with law-fare-ing their enemies, they will be emboldened. My vote for Trump is to stamp out this communist take over of our elections.

Sorry, he comes off weak when he is dealing with the voters.
Scott Adams nailed the DeSantis demeanor to a T.

It is you that has no ability to understand why the guy isn’t cutting it nationally. Or you don’t want to hear it.

Wishing it wasn’t so and insulting all the people who can see it won’t change a thing.

I believe people on this thread have made their opinion on RDS quite clear.

“The primaries are over before they even begun.”

When do they began? LOL!

A lot of people say RDS should have waited until 2028, but that's silly. He does not believe Trump can beat Biden so he chose to enter the 2024 race in an attempt to ensure Biden is defeated.

The truth is, Trump's allure is that he a giant middle finger to the media and to Washington DC, and people love that. They are not ready to give that up. But the truth also is, Trump will not beat Biden and we will be worse off for it. The only positive is that Trump will be gone once he loses in 2024. I just hope we can somehow hold Congress until 2028, but I don't know how likely that is either.

To be fair, Pence was in charge of the Covid response.

I think you completely misunderstand Trump’s MAGA base. It’s true that the four indictments have only served to strengthen my support of Trump, but it has nothing to do with “sympathy.” It has everything to do with a steeled resolve to support a candidate who has been so disruptive in a corrupt political landscape. And the indictments are glaring symptoms of that corruption.

Well said. I would only add that Trump supporters also remember four years of peace and prosperity, freedom and strength, national security and promises made, promises kept.

I agree. Trump was doing well but not spectacularly well until the indictments started coming down. Then the pent up anger of the Republican electorate kicked in and they’re now determined to nominate him as a big eff you to the Deep State.

He will win the nomination but has no path to the White House. He absolutely will not win Georgia, for example. By letting their anger outweigh their common sense, Republican primary voters will have invited four more years of democrat rule. Idiots.

2024 is not business as usual - the 2020 election was stolen, and we should all be outraged.

The spectacle of Republican zombie elites slow walking the party through the typical primary and debate process, as if this was a normal election is just pathetic.

Weighing the pros and cons of lesser Republican candidates, when the rightful winner is willing to put himself out there, at great personal cost - this is insanity.

It has to be Trump - there is no other way to make things right.

On top of that, he is obviously the best man for the job, by light years.

Ronnie has proven he is not the better man either. He is beholden to change his views or policies based upon what his big donors demand of him. That is utter weakness and just makes him like all other RINOs.

Excellent point ----

First of all - this is a great thread/post. Honest opinions and good discussions.

“But Florida has a booming economy as well, with a record $22 billion surplus last year.”

I’m a Floridian. Florida has some major problems that Ron has not addressed. Ask someone in FL what they are paying for insurance. If the state has $22 billion surplus, maybe that should be used to help the people in FL to pay for their insurance.

Ask someone in FL about the traffic here. Wait till there is another mandatory evacuation of the state due to a hurricane. It won’t end well. And again, ask about vehicle insurance rates.

DeSantis was a congressman for 5 years. Did he do anything to stop the spending? Did he do anything to take a stand? He was pretty much an unremarkable congressman.

As a candidate, he is “stiff” (bobblehead). His wife is a detriment to his campaign, which is unusual. She’s very attractive but hard, very hard, to listen to or watch. She comes across as too “eager” to be 1st Lady (sort of like Jill Biden).

Others have mentioned that DeSantis requested that the legislature change the rules so he could run. That really was a slimy thing to do.

DeSantis PROMISED the voters in Florida he would serve out his term. That was a lie.

The ethanol lobby, the sugar lobby and Disney do not see him as tepid. Trump has been unfairly arrested leading most of his voters to defend him. This is the main reason for the polling gap.
Plus, even the ballsy Tucker failed to ask him tough questions. The interview was pap, garnering almost no re-tweets of it.
I will be as big a Trumpist as anyone, after the nomination is secured for Trump. No one should have an easy, entitled ride to it.

I read recently that their “pollster” has worked for Trump, receiving big bucks from him. So, I’d take their poll with a grain of salt.

Someday DeSantis might be fit to be President...but *not* today. DJT has *proven* himself to be fit *today*.

Put down your crack pipe.

Are you saying Trump has had an easy ride to nomination? That’s nuts.

TR was a progressive Republican, enamored of big government. I don’t think he should be a model for anything.

The checks on your pants are showing. If DeSantis has a twenty-two billion dollar surplus, where is the sales tax reduction?
