1) The Senate is now taking a procedural vote to curb debate on the nomination of Charles Q. Brown to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This is in response to the months of “holds” by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) on more than 300 military promotions.
2) The Senate often approves such promotion nominations in a routine fashion. But Tuberville prevented that. Tuberville protested the Pentagon’s abortion policy and refused to allow the Senate from fast-tracking these nominations.
3) Tuberville insisted that if Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) really wanted these promotions to go through, he should call for individual votes on them.
Schumer could have started this process months ago. And it will consume time to process the nominations.
4) But if the Senate clears the current procedural hurdle, it will likely vote to confirm Brown as Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman sometime tonight.
5) Republicans were critical of Schumer for not trying to advance the nominations individually – despite Tuberville’s gambit on these types of promotions.
The Senate has also teed up a procedural vote this evening on the nomination of Randy George to be Army Secretary.
6) His confirmation could come as early as tomorrow.
Also in the parliamentary queue now: Eric Smith to be Marine Commandant.
🚨Rep. @ChipRoytx: Have you rescinded the October 4, 2021 memo that you issued directing federal law enforcement to target concerned parents?
Attorney General Garland: No.
WHY NOT? pic.twitter.com/nB9WBJ5PhN— Nicki Neily (@nickineily) September 20, 2023
THIS IS THE STRANGEST THING I HAVE SEEN TODAY: The President of Brazil, Lula, standing next to President Biden says, “Can you hear me, President Biden?”, “President Biden, can you hear me?” WATCH pic.twitter.com/aiwDQ61YKN— Simon Ateba (@simonateba) September 20, 2023
Is there a way to watch the next one live on my PC?
Anyone have a link?
