Pope says ‘backward’ U.S. conservatives have replaced faith with ideology

Pope Francis has blasted the “backwardness” of some conservatives in the U.S. Catholic Church, saying they have replaced faith with ideology and that a correct understanding of Catholic doctrine allows for change over time.

Francis’ comments were an acknowledgment of the divisions in the U.S. Catholic Church, which has been split between progressives and conservatives who long found support in the doctrinaire papacies of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, particularly on issues of abortion and same-sex marriage.

Many conservatives have blasted Francis’ emphasis instead on social justice issues such as the environment and the poor, while also branding as heretical his opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried Catholics receive the sacraments.

Francis made the comments in a private meeting with Portuguese members of his Jesuit religious order while visiting Lisbon on Aug. 5; the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, which is vetted by the Vatican secretariat of state, published a transcript of the encounter Monday. During the meeting, a Portuguese Jesuit told Francis that he had suffered during a recent sabbatical year in the United States because he came across many Catholics, including some U.S. bishops, who criticized Francis’ 10-year papacy as well as today’s Jesuits. …

The Curia possesses power like that? AFAICS, they are there to act on the pope’s behalf and are not some independent body.

Historically, it’s only been secular heads of state that removed popes, and that by force.

The need for the cross can never be changed nor is subject to re-interpretation. The Fact of the empty grave and the resurrection can never be changed nor is subject to reinterpretation. The declaration that Christ is come as God in the flesh cannot be disputed. All things that look like a new teaching or interpretation must pass through those filters. If anything or any new teaching by men or “spirits” that appears fresh and new should clash with those filters, then the “new thing’ must be discarded and seen as ‘antichrist”!

Not different. Expounded... deepened... taken from a different perspective... and therein lies the point. The Church was promised the Holy Spirit to preach, teach, and baptize until the end of the age. Truth may be expounded upon but not changed. There is no new truth, just truth that grows through revelation.

Truth doesn’t grow. WE were promised the Holy Spirit. Not church leaders. We individuals. And it ought to be very obvious Pope Che doesn’t know Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

Everything we need to preach, teach and baptize we have revealed - in scripture. We have no need to Augustine to invent what is now called Calvinism, for example. No need for Pope Che to take things from a different perspective.

That is pure garbage from hell. If you follow Pope Che, that is where you will end. Indeed, if you worship The Church, it is where you already are.

Sigh... it always comes down to this.

1. We have the Holy Spirit but Scripture speaks to the authority of the Church for unity of faith.

Matt 18:15 “If your brother sins [against you], go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. 16 If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.

1 Tim 3:15 But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.

2. We are individuals but we are supposed to be united in faith. Look around and see the disunity brought by private interpretation. The devil uses the fallibility of the individual to divide our unity. We have the indwelling of the Spirit but looking at the world can we truly say that Christians are united in that same Spirit?

3. New Testament Scripture came from the Church, not the other way around. Jesus founded His Church upon the Apostles (Matt 16:18) and this Church is shown clearly throughout the New Testament as they wrote to the far-flung congregations for reproof and encouragement. There is no basis for the Epistles except that there was a central authority in the Church.

4. If you haven't noticed, we are having issues with the Church hierarchy and it's been a big problem since Vatican II. If you think Christianity will flourish in the world without the Catholic Church, you haven't been paying attention. We are praying and seeking correction from our Bridegroom. The Church is only holy in Her communion with Him.

Sigh.

The Church has authority to discipline members. That covers the two passages you mention. Totally agree and have taken part in it in churches.

Instead of looking at the “disunity brought by private interpretation”, look at the heresy brought about by the political rulers of the Roman Catholic Church, to include replacing the Word of God with their man-made rules - from “priests” to “Purgatory”.

We need a standard and that standard is the Word of God. Not the Roman Catholic Bishops and Pope, most of whom have been non-Christians.

The churches ACCEPTED the New Testament but did not create it. NO church or Bishop directed its writing. The churches role - and not just the ROMAN church - was to reject phony additional scriptures - and the Roman Catholic Church failed to do that in spite of Jerome’s urging.

One last try and I will shake the dust from my sandals...

A Church that only has the authority to discipline its members is no Church... it's a prison. Go back to 1 Tim 3:15 But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth. It is not just a Church of discipline but of truth. She has shared this truth since Her foundation by Christ Himself.

A Church that requires the private interpretation of Scripture is both anti-Scripture (2 Peter 1:20) and ahistorical. From the time of the Gospels until Gutenberg's printing press, it was impossible that people received the Good News from any source except the Church. Bibles were printed by hand and were not obtainable by any other than churches for use in liturgy or by the very wealthy who could commission their own copies.

The churches ACCEPTED the New Testament but did not create it.

A laughable assertion! Who wrote the New Testament? The Apostles. What were they doing at the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15) if not governing the Church and expounding on the Gospel? They decided that Gentiles didn't have to become Jews like them in order to be part of the Church. It was their decision to make and made from their authority to govern the Church given by Christ.

If the Church requires each to read the Bible for His own salvation, there was no Church until Gutenberg made it possible. That negates 75% of Church history... and makes no sense whatsoever.

brothers in the Kingdom not in communion with
the Church. You prayed for all to be one in faith. I
will not encourage division among Your followers
(Mark 9:38-41 & Luke 11:23 & John 10:16).

Yeah, and it's going to be a problem for him one day.

If he plays his cards right, the priest hearing his last Confession--and Francis better hope the Reaper doesn't take him by surprise before he makes it--will have his schedule cleared and be sitting back there with a full pot of coffee.
