There was a lot of really greatness in music before the 90s and I just give this as an example, but could easily give you a hundred more.
but I just don't see it today, and I don't know why.
Am I just missing all of today's talent somehow or has something changed?
And before Prince, there was little Stevie Wonder, check him out rockin out on the drums.

I’m sure you’ve seen Standing in the Shadows of Motown?

What did he play. A half dozen different instruments???
80’s pop, rock, hard rock and metal are my jam, baby!
Well, here we go…

I joke that it used to be that Heavy Metal music was the music you played to annoy your parents. Now parents play heavy metal to annoy their kids.
Since someone brought up music you may want to consider an interesting observation. If you want to know what what mood or condition a country is in, all you have to do is listen to the music the general public is listening to and it pretty well tells you what goes on in most of their heads, and this is exactly reflected in the music we hear today. Dissonance, mayhem as well as garbage.
And in the 80s Steve Lukather of Toto, was a one-man wrecking crew, it’s amazing how many songs he played on.
I still listen to Chicago about once a week. They have so many songs, that one will just pop in my head, and just I hit the play button on my iphone.
The stories about Jimi Hendrix discovering them are classic, and how he signed them as his opening act. You probably know, but he supposedly even told them “your guitar player is better than me” after a concert one night.
Augusta, Georgia had James Brown.
He was a singer, dancer, and his concerts were incredible.
Horn sections, singers, dancers...
They were more than just concerts...
They were a whole full production.

Back in the 1960’s and 70’s lots really talented people who could do it all.
I have heard he could play 27 different instruments.
I pretty much stopped listening to “rock” after Dire Straits.
All downhill to grunge and whatever it is these days.
That was written by Carole King. Most of their early songs were written by pros and mostly performed by session musicians, which is why people call them a fake band.
But it's their voices on the records. I look at it this way: while the rest of the Beach Boys were on tour Brian Wilson sat in a studio with a bunch of top musicians (many of the same guys who played for the Monkees) and developed the album Pet Sounds. the rest of the band came in at the end just to sing the parts.
So why aren't the Beach Boys called fakes? What about Motown, they didn't write the songs and they didn't play the instruents, they just sang (just like the monkees). Were they fake too?
The guys sang the songs, they were part of the product. They also began taking over the music playing later on too. for my nickel calling them the same as Milli Vanilli is absurd, those guys were male models who were hired to pose and lip sync to other peoples music and singing. Nowhere near the same thing.
Dr. Demento is a name I have not heard in awhile. He was great.
I was recently listening to and reading the story about the 60’s and 70’s rock band Badfinger. What great music but a tragic story.
How would you auto-tone Janis Joplin?
