Does anyone remember a time before milli vanilli, before autotune, a time when rock bands were actually really talented musicians ?

There was a lot of really greatness in music before the 90s and I just give this as an example, but could easily give you a hundred more.
but I just don't see it today, and I don't know why.
Am I just missing all of today's talent somehow or has something changed?

And yes, I’m partial to Love Over Gold, especially “Private Investigations”.

Ah, very good. Clearly, I need to make this a bit tougher...
Who remembers "Betty Lou's Got A New Pair Of Shoes"?

Bread? All of them were talented musicians. Mike Botts was a drummer for Lunda Ronsdat when not playing for Bread. Larry Knechtel played piano on bridge over troubled waters. David Gates was a talented guitar player. Where did you get that info?

The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnati. I got nothing. The closet I can come is Maynard G. Krebbs' "The Monster that Devoured Cleveland." It's not even a song.

There are a ton of great bands out there. You won’t hear them on the radio, though. You have to dig for them.

There is - or was - a Russian/Ukrainian Chicago tribute band. They’re kind of amazing. I don’t know if they’re active now, with all the mess going on.Make Me Smile – Chicago (Leonid & Friends cover)
They just finished one highly successful tour in the Eastern US, and will be back in the Fall to tour the West.

You're right - my mistake regarding Bread. In fact, I was thinking of Larry Knechtel, who I knew to be a well-known session musician - I did not realize he was actually a member of Bread.

Yes, that’s them. I heard that one member’s family had been displaced; but that was quite a while ago now.

The best and underrated guitarist of them all was Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler is hardly underrated. He is routinely mentioned as being among the best.

“now people just listen to the classics.”
Yes.
I quit listening around the peak of the Dire Straits era. just garbage after that.
I did ignore most all the heavy drug, whatever crap. Realized long before that preteens needed that “bang your head against the wall” sort of noise and ignored it.
Now, the weird chanting and yelling over coputer drum tacks (inner city rap?) seems to be the rage.
And millennials wonder why we laugh at them?
