I was east of Al Arish less than a mile from the coast in Egyptian Sinai, when I looked own and there was Medusa staring up at me. She was the base of a lantern and her screaming mouth was the hole into which was poured the oil to be lit. I searched around and found the second half of the lantern. The two parts fit perfectly. At the request of a person who will not be named, the two parts were sent to the Israeli Archaeology department who I was told cold meld the two pieces and produce a classic piece. It went to Bir-sheeba, and it was never returned. I have never forgotten that face that was staring up at me from the ground. I also learned another lesson; never trust an Israeli archaeologist.
