In fact, the importance of the 3 Gorges Dam going down, to my understanding, was about a water event so great and Exposing what was going on in that tunnel. It wasn’t anything good.

Not just an evacuation flooding disaster.

If you look at the simulations that are posted in comments above, it will flash flood major population centers.

Yichang, Wuhan, Nanjing will all be a major disaster with millions killed.

The surge will have major impacts as far down the river as Suzhou and Shanghai to the point that any ocean shipping near the river mouth will need to emergency egress to prevent being caught up in it.

I don't know about any tunnels under the damn dam.

One of the limiting factors to building a dam is that the rock under the dam is softer than the rock on either side. That is why there is a gorge there in the first place.

The 3 gorges dam was built there is because Mao had a dream of a dam being built there. The designers warned about the structural issues from a dam that high with that much of an impoundment area.

The water behind the 3 gorges dam actually affects the rotation of the earth. It is very small but it is measurable.

I think that a lot of the speculation about “tunnels” came from a (now) discredited source (remember “BDA?”).
