That the end of the Russian Empire brought about by Russian Revolution also resulted in the former Emperor’s execution now feels like an inevitability. However, though his monarchy was overthrown, Nicholas and his family were related to many other royal families, thanks to Queen Victoria’s habit of arranging marriages for her offspring across Europe.
In the 15 months from his abdication to his death, royal relations still in power debated if and how they should grant the family asylum, with many of the Romanov descendants believing King George V of England, the czar’s cousin and grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, could have saved them.
Would this have been a possibility, or were they doomed from the start? Here’s how the events unfolded leading up to their brutal deaths

All the accounts I have read never mention Nicholas and family having anything like Royal Guards or any serious protective service, devoted specifically to the Royal household - who had serious contingency plans with the power and ability to move them where they needed to go
The Bolsheviks had the soldiers and sailors on their side. Also, very good planning, seizing the key transportation and communication points. Nobody supported Kerensky and he escaped early in the limo of Sheldon Whitehouse (grandfather of the senator).
It was a war where the assumptions of literally everyone in power were smashed down and their arrogance was laid low.
The only country who benefitted from WWI was the United States, the least-affected combatant.
By comparison, look at how long the fall of America is taking.
Yes there was a lot of socialist upheaval going on the UK at the time. The government didn’t want to take any chances. Its my understanding the UK royals wanted to, but the government wouldn’t.
Yes, the revolt was supported by the Kaiser, and with German gold. People forget this. thenPres. Wilson was lukewarm (typical demonrat) in supporting the effort to land at Archangel with British to capture Lenin. The US sent 5000 troops to join much larger British and multinational forces and counter-revolutionaries White Russians (who were Socialists already).
The area resisted Bolshevik rule from 1918 to 1920 and was a stronghold of the anti-Bolshevik White Army. The White Army was supported by this Allied invasion force in which British, French, Italian, and American troops helped a nascent coup against Lenin run by British intel forces and their agent Sidney Reilly. Bolsheviks attacked the Moscow Brit Embassy and killed Royal Navy Captain Romey (he delivered 100s of thousands of English pound notes to Reilly and his British handler). Wilson was a terrible President, and the labor conditions in the US definitely worked for the Bolshies. Just as today.
The venture later labeled the North Russia Intervention, failed not the least for the mutinies of White Russian units who murdered their Brit officers and handed over units to the Bolsheviks. The Don Cossacks were the best organized and used to fighting and they held on in the Ukraine.
Such a tragedy created by Bolsheviks and thugs.
And Kaizer Wilhelm of Germany too
Even if Tsar Nicholas had survived on the throne very doubtful if his son would have been able to keep the monarchy going. Alexi had hemophilia and was a sickly boy. The Bolsheviks would have won in the end and their blood bath would only have been delayed.
Kaiser Wilhelm was nuts but would it have saved us from Hitler if Willie had been left on the throne?
He wasn’t as much nuts as he was an immature jerk!
And deep banking. Lenin got bank funding, needed money to pay for the revolution, irony eh?
Not accurate.
The Nips did OK, and the Italians gained a lot of territory from Austria. France probably came close to breaking even in ending up with money and a couple of German states. Britain picked up chunks of Africa, but that probably wasn't worth the cost. The big winners, however, were Poland and Finland.
The father Sheldon Whitehouse had a plantation in FL, near the town of Capps. They have always been demonrats, Sheldon the 3rd sold the place in FL (not sportsman hunter or farmer he spent his youth at the yacht clubs of Rhode Island, and polishing the silver spoon in his mouth and his stupid whine). See: Kavanaugh Senate Judiciary hearing- Whitehouse made an a@@ of himself, no surprise. And diane feinstein appeared to be threatening Murkowski (photo of it) an playing kissy face with Lindsey Graham. All of them crooks.
And how did that work out for them?
The permanently wilted left arm (crushed at birth) made him a weak child and completely arrogant Prussian clown not able to measure up. He always had the left gloved hand and sleeved arm attached to a sword scabbard— to hide his useless arm.
Repeal the 17th Amendment!
State legislatures even the Rhode Island legislature couldn’t do worse!
Nips ?
…….
Exactly!
He couldn’t in his mind fit the Prussian ideal of what it was to be king!
I’ve read some biographies of him. You tend to feel sorry for him. He was Victoria’s favorite grandchild, was quite upset at her funeral.
Churchill later said if a Hohenzollern, a Hapsburg or a Wittlesbach had been left on their thrones there would have been no Hitler!
A lesson that wasn't lost on us after WWII and our decision to keep Emperor Hirohito on the throne. Wise move.
“The only country who benefitted from WWI was the United States, the least-affected combatant.”
Same with WW2.
We went into that one in a depression. Ramping up factories to supply England and fight the war in the Pacific was just what the economy needed. By wars end the US had the only economy that hadn’t been bombed back to the stone age and most of the world owed us a debt for war supplies.
England finally paid it’s war debt off in 2006. With the convoluted way France does it’s debt who knows what they’ve done.
China still owes 500 million dollars that was lent them to prop their money, on top of the equipment sent to them.
We came out of both world wars smelling like a rose 🌹.
