Actors say Hollywood studios want their AI replicas — for free, forever
The Verge ^ | July 13, 2023 | Andrew Webster

During today’s press conference in which Hollywood actors confirmed that they were going on strike, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s chief negotiator, revealed a proposal from Hollywood studios that sounds ripped right out of a Black Mirror episode.

In a statement about the strike, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) said that its proposal included “a groundbreaking AI proposal that protects actors’ digital likenesses for SAG-AFTRA members.”

“If you think that’s a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again.”

When asked about the proposal during the press conference, Crabtree-Ireland said that “This ‘groundbreaking’ AI proposal that they gave us yesterday, they proposed that our background performers should be able to be scanned, get one day’s pay, and their companies should own that scan, their image, their likeness and should be able to use it for the rest of eternity on any project they want, with no consent and no compensation. So if you think that’s a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again.”

In response, AMPTP spokesperson Scott Rowe sent out a statement denying the claims made during SAG-AFTRA’s press conference. “The claim made today by SAG-AFTRA leadership that the digital replicas of background actors may be used in perpetuity with no consent or compensation is false. In fact, the current AMPTP proposal only permits a company to use the digital replica of a background actor in the motion picture for which the background actor is employed. Any other use requires the background actor’s consent and bargaining for the use, subject to a minimum payment.”

The use of generative AI has been one of the major sticking points in negotiations between the two sides (it’s also a major issue behind the writers strike), and in her opening statement of the press conference, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said that “If we don’t stand tall right now, we are all going to be in trouble, we are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines.”

The SAG-AFTRA strike will officially commence at midnight tonight.

Disclosure: The Verge’s editorial staff is also unionized with the Writers Guild of America, East.

Wow, I just spent 20 minutes looking at her and finding out about the “ASMR” world in all its weirdness. That led me down a rathole to “Know Your Meme” and reading about that subgenre and Belle Dauphine. I can’t believe people can make money with all this stuff. In the end, it all seems to lead to porn.

The Netflix British series Dark Mirror just had an episode called “Joan is Awful”

It was all about how actors and actresses had signed away their likeness. The episode revolved around AI versions of these actors.

It was great dark comedy.

The award shows required “diversity” or the show no matter how good, how popular do not “qualify” for any awards.

Hollywood has bent both knees to this requirement and will not produce any good shows.

Have you noticed how fugly modern young actresses have become these days?

I suspect now the Casting Couch is pretty much for males, seeing how gays now run Hollywood.

Music too will have this problem. Just wait until there’s a bunch of new songs by “The Beatles”.

So, imagine a deepfake of President Trump doing or saying something so offensive or hideous.... and the DNC SWEARS up and down that it’s 100% real and gives it to the MSM to broadcast as far and wide as they can.

You and I, real thinking people, we’ll HOPEFULLY know it’s a fake... but the sheeple who swallow everything the MSM says will take it as gospel truth.

That weapon is in their hands and I am pretty sure they intend to use it.

Liberals have been searching everywhere for Trump's fabled "N-word tape" as if it were the Ark of the Covenant. They could've just as easily deep-faked it.

I would imagine the porn industry is way ahead on this technology.

I work in networking (design, install, maintenance, outages, etc.) and I’ve said for a good 15 years or more (20?) that porn is a HUGE driver of technology and one of the main reasons for the development of high speed internet.

I agree with you, and the scenario you suggest is highly likely.

Now here’s one for you: somebody produces a deepfake of a Republican Presidential candidate whose name is NOT Donald Trump doing or saying something outrageous or hideous.

What do you suppose the more enthusiastic Trump supporters will do?

They’re pimp-daddies to the agents who are the pimps for the whorish actors.

How many social media sites have hidden way down in their use agreements {that nobody has the hours to read} the right to use your image in any way that they want?

'I don't want a world in which a handful of global conglomerates completely controls the flow of all information, including cultural products.'

I agree with this, and the rest of your post, completely. I've recently watched some older movies that I've seen several times before; and I notice that as I get older, they become even more meaningful.

One of my favorites is 'Second Hand Lions'; and the one we watched tonight was 'Moonstruck'.

Even though these are modern movies and not yet 'classics', I don't see how they could be repeated today, and they certainly couldn't be done again with 'AI' or ChatGPT.

Truly HUMAN things will never be recreated in any meaningful way by machine intelligence.

In a *hundred years AI will be able to create movie characters targeted to appeal to different personality types. They’ll be much better than the ‘real’ people acting now.

(*A hundred years’ for AI is two human years...)

Best of all they won't spout inane political opinions.

Well, unless 'inane political opinions' increase ticket sales among that particular targeted subset group AI is appealing to...

Interesting post but isn’t entertainment audience-driven. If we don’t watch or listen to something then it flops. Right now audiences seem to be losing interest in ‘woke’.

My wife and I enjoy the enormous amount of older shows that are available. The writers, actors and management can fight it out. The outcome is of no concern to us.
