Less seen dystopian movies (patience is required):
1) Fando y Lis (1968) directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. It premiered at the 1968 Acapulco Film Festival. A full-scale riot subsequently broke out, leading to the film being banned in Mexico.
2) The Bed Sitting Room (1969). It is an absurdist, post-apocalyptic, satirical black comedy. Stars Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Spike Milligan, Ralph Richardson, Marty Feldman, and Harry Secombe.
3) A Boy and his Dog (1975). Written by Harlan Ellison. Starring a young Don Johnson. Rather graphic but unique.
4) Zardoz (1974). Starring Sean Connery. A classic of “What happens to leftists when they get what they want?”
5) The Lathe of Heaven (1980). A PBS movie, of all things. But much better than the remake starring James Caan. Written by science fiction author Ursula K. Le Guin.
6) Habitat (1997) (Direct to video) A boy who can’t get a tan lives with way too many houseplants. Actually worth a look.
WALL-E is by far the best! So many things about that movie points to where we’re headed.
A.I. was a horrible movie.
"Dredd", (2012), with Karl Urban, Olivia Thirby and Lena Headey
(from Game of Thrones), is much better. Lena Headey is plays
the sadistic psycho, drug dealing gang leader.
Pretty dark movie about a future collapsed USA.
I went to see that when it came out, convinced that it would not be faithful to Harlan Ellison's novella.
It was faithful to Harlan Ellison's novella.
A boy loves his dog.
Surprised that I one has mentioned “Last Man on Earth”, original with Vincent Price, or “Panic in Year Zero” with Ray Milland. Both good movies.
Yes, that one. 😁
They frequently post that they think Idiocracy is about where Trump and MAGA voters want to take the country.
Was wondering that, too. “Fifth Element” is more of a sci-fi romance. One of my favorites.
It is the idiot that doesn’t know they are the idiot.
Dystopian?
The Omega Man, 1971, was pretty good.
The 70s had a ton of dystopian movies. Then came Reagan to dispel the fear and despair.
Lol. No dystopian movies in the 80s?
RoboCop
Yeah, flying cars?
I want that dystopia.
Fahrenheit 451.
And then in 1985 came Brazil which was sort of a dark comic reworking of 1984 and just straight up brilliant. To me Brazil and 1984 the movie are two peas in a pod but with totally different moods.
Cool!
I like BRAZIL too, but dystopian movies shouldn’t be funny, to count as such and yes, that one is a rip-off of 1984.
I don’t remember the name of the person here on FR that turned me on to this book and movie, watching the movie, I could not turn away from it, especially after you realized what was happening.
