My dog has a behavioral issue, and gets loose from time to time and kills cats... two so far. This is something that is making neighbors angry, obviously. Clearly the dog cannot stay here.
She is also perhaps the stupidest dog I have ever owned and is completely untrainable. We have successfully housebroken her. However, for the eating ritual, she WAS sitting when commanded, and began eating on the release command 'Okay', but she forgot half that training and now just stares at you when you release her.
Obviously we would never be able to train her not to kill cats.
I want to exhaust every option before I put her down. Is such a dog someone I want to give up to a shelter / rescue? Or is it best to just put her down?
PS: for those saying to rehome rural, it is not really a viable choice as many farms, homesteads, etc. maintain barn cats who are not housecats.
Huskies are especially hard to socialize if they missed their window to doing so.
Every dog is not a Reader’s Digest kind of dog. A dog that won’t stop killing cats needs to be put down. It’s a dog; one minute it will be alive, and the next minute it will be dead, and know nothing. I say this as a dog lover.
I had a 35 Lb terrier/chow mix and her prey drive was incredible. One day I opened the back door of the garage. We had a huge back yard, downhill. She greeted me but at the next instant we both noticed a crow on the ground at the bottom of the pard. She took off. Crows take bit to get off the ground with those long wings. She snatched it right out of the air as it took off and dispatched it. Crow didn’t like it much, but still it was an incredible sight

Years ago multiple neighbors had cats that constantly destroyed our patio furniture and plants and i warned them my dogs (JRTs) would kill them if they caught them and they laughed me off
About a month a 5 cats later they started keeping their cats inside or something as the destruction of our stuff stopped
If I let my dog roam and destroy peoples stuff I would be in trouble but people let their damned cats do whatever and somehow think its ok “because cats roam” or some shit like that.
My best friend had a dog that would get out run through the electronic fence and then it attacked the golden retriever across the street and finally bit the landscaping guy. She was about to get sued so she finally had to take him to the vet and well you know.
Some dogs just don’t socialize properly.
Yep, if your cat is in my garden, plants, or on my patio rug/furniture and it doesn’t get put down on the spot it had a lucky day.

Pet owners who let their cats and dogs run free are disgusting. They hate their animals and are putting them at risk every single time. It breaks my heart every time I see one killed in the road.
One last concern if you decide to rehome,
Anything or anyone that remotely sounds like a cat could become a victim.
Example: the other day I heard what I thought was a cat crying outside, nope. It was the neighbors new baby crying.
Second: if you rehome the dog personally, you could be held legally liable if something goes wrong. And most shelters I am aware of will not take a dog with known problems like this. The few that do have a waiting list. Reading through your posts here you do not have that kind of time.

This morning we watched our little (120 lb wrecking ball) knucklehead sit on the deck and stare at a bunny 20 ft away. The bunny eyeballed him, kept chewing grass, for maybe 5-10 minutes.
Finally the bunny got bored and slowly hopped off...
Personally, I would consider putting the dog down. It will likely end up someone else’s problem.
We once adopted a small dog (terrier mix) rescue that bit two adult male relatives, a cat, and would have likely bitten a child had we not stopped her. Went after my husband any time he came near me. We spent a ton on obedience training to no avail. The place we adopted from had a contract that if we had issues we return the pet so we did that but we told them she was risky and would bite. They ignored us and she bit people at her next home. She had to be put down eventually.
I love rescues but if there is a history of neglect, mistreatment, or breeds with a strong prey drive are very hard to break, I personally wouldn’t risk it.

Obviously, you enlisted as a member of the Insensitive Imbecile club. There are many cat lovers on FR. We don't appreciate even joking about dead cats, having lost beloved pets along the way.
Husky, escape artists that need a TON of exercise. I would look for a Husky rescue.

I’m a bit confused. How is the dog getting out? Can’t you tether it or put in a fence?
If the cats are in your yard and it happens then it’s the cat’s owners fault.
