I suspect the "adult loser children" living at home would happily move into a singles apartment if they could afford the rent.

Well, some would. Many sons have mommy issues. a 27 y/o love/hates their mom cause she is always complaining that he won’t get a steady job and he doesn’t help with and around the house. He think he should live for free and use his mom’s house and a sex pad.
On the other side...mom has man issues. She uses her son as a substitute “man” of house. She doesn’t need a man because she has one..although, he’s kind of a slug...and a poor substitute.
And its starting to become a little embarrassing as he approaches 30...and its all over if he is approaching 40.

He should have been out of the house 10 years ago.

I think you’re right that the parents would be happy to see them go.

But, since the “adult LOSER children” are... LOSERS... they’re dug in having Mom cooking and doing their laundry. And NOT working to afford rent.
