A golden retriever was shot dead by a police officer in Ohio and dramatic bodycam footage caught the controversial moment - as cries for the cop's firing from the bereaved family grow.
The July 2 shooting footage showed Lorain police officer Elliott Palmer shooting three-and-a-half-year-old Dixie and then leaving the dog dying on the sidewalk.
The dog ran up to the responding officer at a scene, and while it did not appear aggressive it was coming towards Palmer when he opened fire.
That sparked outrage from people who witnessed the killing of the dog and now family and social-media posters are calling for the officer's job.
'After she was shot one time in the street, he should have just let it go and let us get the dog and take her where she needed to be treated,' The dog's owner, Tammie Kerns, said to 3News, in tears.
'But he didn't do that. She was crawling — useless, helpless — in the street. He continued shooting her. She was trying to come to safety, and he just kept shooting her three more times after the first time,' she added.
The Lorain Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, assuring transparency and a thorough examination of the circumstances.
It's unclear if Palmer remains on-duty during the investigation. Dailymail.com has reached out to the Lorain Police Department but officials did not respond in time for this report.
The Kerns family has threatened legal action against the police department, demanding justice for Dixie.

Cops have always been dishonest and corrupt, but something I liked about the old cops is that they were large, and in most cases willing to fight rather than just shoot you, but then they were always beating people out of meanness and using drop weapons and such.
Sorry, but no. See post 57
The assumption that someone who is in their mind in a fight of flight scenario, and responded with fight is evil is nonsense.
Any animal running at you, can be perceived as a threat. If you are familiar and comfortable with dogs, you are more apt to know the signs of aggression.. if you are not, then its an animal charging at you, period.
I love dogs, but I am not stupid enough or naive enough to think all people are comfortable with them or understand their mannerisms or behaviors.
A dog charging at someone, even with tail wagging, is still an animal charging.. those unfamiliar or uncomfortable with dogs, are not going to instantly KNOW the animal does not have ill intent. They are going to perceive this as a fight of flight situation and react.
Your attempt to condemn someone for their reaction, which is different than yours, shows the ignorance far too many dog owners display when it comes to this basic understanding.
“Is this cop a psychopath?”
Possibly not as much as you might think. Not all dogs act the same.
While golden retrievers are not aggressive by nature, there are several possible reasons why they might show aggression. Any dog can be possessive, try to assert dominance, be afraid or in pain, or come from a background of abuse or neglect.
It could have appeared to the cop that the dog was advancing on him and the cop was afraid of the dog. Just because a dog approaches someone doesn’t make it a safe approach all the time depending on history and treatment.
Example, I was exercise running while in the military with my daughter on a bicycle on my right next to the curb and we were approached from the other direction by a woman on a bicycle with her dog leashed on her right. My daughter was a few feet in front of me, still on my right, when the woman’s dog crashed into her trying to get to my daughter and knocked the woman down. She held the leash and the dog was cut off short. But there was no warning, no growling, no bearing off teeth, or any other behavior that I could see that preempted that.
It can happen. And an animal moving toward a person without knowledge of the animal can be considered threatening. The article mentioned the incident happened at a scene. A scene of what? We have no idea what happened prior to the cops arrival. Need more information.

So, your supposition is, if you are not an expert in animal behavior you are unqualified and incompetent to be a police officer?
Hey, Joe, you’re competent in knowledge the law enforcement, you aced the academy, and cleared all your psychological profiles, but hey, since you are not able to discern a dogs behavior in a split second the way some internet guy says you should, you can’t have the job.
Get real
Its a natural response to a perceived threat. Sorry, but a golden retriever or smaller dog running at me is not a perceived threat. Maybe a large rottweiler, but not a retriever, lab, doodle, or any of many other breeds known for being people friendly and playful. So no, not 'any animal' can be perceived as a threat by an adult male. A person who feels his only response to a dog running towards him is to shoot the dog is not a man, not an adult, and should not have a gun.
If you have pets, you need to control them, especially dogs. It is not the responsibility of passers-by to know or determine the intention of your dog if it runs up to them. That’s what leash laws are all about. It doesn’t matter if the dog is in your yard, it won’t confine itself to the yard. No person would ever have to shoot my dog, unless that person forcibly enters my house or immediate presence. Then my dog will leave them no option.
He needs to find a line of work where scary things don’t happen.
By the way, that dog looks like a yellow lab not a golden retriever.
And Ohio cops shooting fleeing black men seems pretty common, too.
I see that you are not interested in rational discussion.
That was not a golden retriever that charged the officer. Watch the video. The owner claims that it was a yellow Lab. Who knows if that was true either. Part of a pack of dogs running wild. I’m thankful I’m not a police officer having to deal with that. Thank you law enforcement for all you do. Not an easy job making split second purbred dog assessments.
I understand that the cop may have panicked when he saw the dog moving towards him. I understand that some think the first shot may be somewhat justified in that case. But to keep shooting the wounded animal when it was crawling away?
Sorry but a golden is NOT a small dog.
I have owned golden’s, they are not by any classification system a small dog.
You and others like you seem to think that because you are familiar with the breed that everyone walking the planet is. This is nonsense.
Not everyone walking the planet is familiar with dog behavior in general let alone particular breeds. Sadly many dog owners are just flat out ignorant, and think because they are comfortable around their dog, that everyone will be, this is a very delusional world view.
A 75 lb animal running at someone, I don’t care what the animal is, can and often is perceived as a threat. Some dog owners sadly, are just flat out oblivious to how others in the world perceive their pets. Assuming every other person on the planet perceives your pet and its behavior the same way you do is a fools errand.
Your animal runs up to someone, even if its the most mild mannered animal in existence, the person they are running at can perceive them as a threat. Fido may only be wanting to say hi and be petted, but to the person they are running at, that is not how they are guaranteed to perceive the behavior. They can perceive it as a threat, and you have no right to say they are unjustified in that response. Your dog absolutely can trigger a fight of flight response, and no one deserves to be strung up from the nearest tree when it does trigger them and they react with fight.
A golden retriever might run toward you to sniff you and\or lick you. The officer must have feared that the beast’s tongue would be poisonous or had razors along its edge.
Well said!
Somehow the hundreds of thousands of USPS workers can interact with dogs every day, but give a pussy a gun and...... but but ma trainin’
All the police department releases is that a cop “used force” on a dog? That’s how they describe it?
I’ replace the full line of command here.
**c’mon rednecks, control your animals.**
That wasn’t much of a problem in rural Mercer County, IL, where I lived for over 62 years. When we moved there was 11 people within a 1 mile radius of our home. All were responsible dog owners, never a problem. But here in rural wooded Lewis Co, TN, there is likely 50+ in the same size area. And we’ve got an abundance of dog owners that don’t train their dogs, and let them roam some as well. They let them bark for hours without correction.
I was driving home one afternoon, when about 2 miles from home, there were two women walking their unleashed dogs along the road: one on one side, and one on the other. I slow down and straddle the center line, when one of the dogs walks out in front of me and stands right in the middle. That forced me to stop. But I didn’t brake hard on purpose, just rolling to a stop with the dog still visible in front of my hood.
The woman screamed at me for ‘almost killing’ her dog. Her friend grabbed it, and I moved on, about 30’, then yelled back at them: “train your dogs to respond to your commands!”
I rolled on, was probably cursed and flipped off, but that’s what we’ve got in this neighborhood, some owners that make the rest look bad.
Some people have no business owning pets.

Funny, more than 5500 postal workers were attacked last year doing their jobs in 2022...
But yes, your pet can never ever been seen by anyone as a threat.
