I am going to presume that her employer found the apartment for her. With that in mind I find it very hard to believe no screening was done to find out if the landlady was a raging racist. After all the firm would want a new hire to be satisfied with the housing arrangement.

...Racism does exist here, but it is very rare... I'm not sure where you live; but, I find that blacks in the United States are extremely racist. So, racism isn't rare at all.
