If the president took them, they are declassified under the presidential records act. For him to say, after the fact, I couldn’t declassify them now has no bearing on whether they were declassified when he took them from the White House.

We shouldn’t lose focus on how ridiculous this is. No one would or should indict a former president for holding up a document. This is true third world stuff.
Seems to me PDJT was showing a contingency plan to attack Iran that Trump discarded as impractical and not remotely anything Trump would contemplate doing. Plan rejected, no longer secret.

It wasn’t DoJ that leaked this but it just as easily could have been the “journalists” who we’re recording him in the first place as well: “The audio recording comes from a July 2021 interview Trump gave at his Bedminster resort for people working on the memoir of Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff. The special counsel’s indictment alleges that those in attendance – a writer, publisher and two of Trump’s staff members – were shown classified information about the plan of attack on Iran.”
It’s likely they’d have kept copies as well.

Trump could have held up the documents and said, “See, here are the papers!” and they could have been print outs of a race from the latest “Daily Racing Forum.”

He’s not literally showing them the papers like “hey come read this.” He’s using the shuffled papers which just turned up as a prop saying, “I’ve got the receipts,” on the Milley claim on the supposed Iran attack. He’s aware that the information is or was secret and comments about Hillary’s carelessness. He’s showing he’s not trying to share or leak information that may be secret.
I don’t like the staffer. She sounds like a kiss @ss. That the worst kind of person to be around Trump. Obsequious and not actually loyal types are high risks.
