The average American household is now spending $3,631 on takeout food every year - but there is one area where residents spend far above the national average.
People living in the District of Columbia typically spend $6,241 a year on takeout - or $120 a week per household - according to a new study by Betway.
Hawaii residents came in second, with the average home forking out $4,647 per year, followed by Maine in third with a typical spend of $4,499, Vermont with $4,443 and New Hampshire with $4,402.
Oklahoma is the state where people are spending the least, with the typical household only budgeting $2,756 per year for ordering in.
The study found that almost 54 million Americans are using food delivery apps, with pizza being the most popular takeout food across the country.
Across the US, delivery lovers are searching for 'pizza takeout' and 'pizza delivery' 309,100 times a month on average.
This equated for 76 percent of all monthly Google searches for different kinds of food analyzed in the study.
Chinese food is the second most popular cuisine - with 37,500 searches a month, and sushi comes in third with 22,900 searches.
Tacos were the country's fourth favorite option, with 7,200 searches.
While people living in the District of Columbia spent the most annually on delivery, New York is home to the highest concentration of takeout fans in the country.
The study considered the number of searches on delivery apps such as Uber Eats and DoorDash per 1,000 residents and found that 45 searches are made every month per 1,000 residents in the Big Apple.

Years ago, I quit Whataburger after seeing the burger flipper stick the spatula down the backside of his pants to give a good scratch.
I worked with several guys who went out to fast food places for lunch and spent minimum of $10. They also were heard talking about how little money they had at the end of the month....
I see 2 brothers in my apt getting delivery or bringing back a bag. One is fat and the other heading there.

The fat, federal bureaucrats squatting like hippos at their desks, chowing down on jumbo bags of potato chips and guzzling two-liter bottles of pop, has been a known feature for 10 years. I keep telling people that this fat slob Obuma army, who can’t figure out which bathroom to use, are incapable, physically, of going door-to-door and confiscating our weapons.

I get lunch out now and then when riding my motorcycle. My wife doesn’t like eating dinner out, so that never happens.
Practically all the food I buy is takeout. I go to the grocery store, put it in a shopping cart and pay for it. Then I take it out.
Yikes, that’s what we spend for people food, pet food and household stuff at Wally World over 4-6 weeks. I don’t eat out but Mr. b will sneak a burger once or twice a month. No, haven’t had beans in forever, rice is a rarity and Mr. b refuses to touch pasta so it’s not those super cheapo ingredients.
It doesn’t just appear it arrives. Walla is not how you spell voila. You have to pay for it and wait while it gets cold in someone’s car. You have to discard a lot of plastic containers. You have to pay a tip whether you want to or not. Other than that it’s magic. Voila, cold food in plastic containers.
Exactly...GenZ can’t cook. A worthless lot.

120 a week? That’s a lot.
I travel usually a few days a week so the company buys my meals. I’ve never used a delivery app. Occasionally I’ll have a pizza delivered to my hotel. Maybe 3-4 times a year.
I range meals from grocery store deli to a chain steakhouse. Depends on time and mood.
To me “Take Out” and “Delivery” are different things. When I’m doing other things I will pick something up and bring it home. Delivery for me is usually 20 to 30% more. Since food prices under Biden have accelerated I can no longer afford delivery and my take out is also way down.

You are correct.
Our YTD 2023 spending on takeout is +/- zero dollars. Closer to Zero than any other number. It is mainly because it is a waste of money but it is also as you say not healthy eating.

we've consciously have cut down on our fast food purchases and only go to a sit down restaurant infrequently...
You spend quite a bit more than i do. Well, we all enjoy different foods . some foods are more expensive than others
For my situation getting take out is cheaper. I live alone and smaller packages of perishable food cost a lot. Add the cost of gasoline to get to the stores and time away from my business it just makes sense. AND I don’t have to prep or clean.
Ironic since I really do love cooking but that’s usually only on the weekends.
Not a millionaire, mind you, a working person making around $150k a year.
But even so... if they're smart enough to make such good money at a job, how could they be so stupid?
And some of us ENJOY cooking. Like today when I served up air fried french fries covered by a slice of cheese and my homemade chili with secret ingredients.
