It has only been a year since Arizona passed the country’s first comprehensive school choice program. But since then, seven other states, including Florida, have followed suit with at least eight more on track to adopt similar bills in the near future.
Families who take advantage of such legislation typically get a separate account from the state or local government for each child they wish to educate independently. The funds can be spent on a variety of approved placements including private and parochial schools, online academies, private tutors, and even home schools.
Given the outsized influence of the teacher unions on the Democrat Party, America’s blue states will undoubtedly be the last to make any similar change to their own educational policies. But as it becomes increasingly difficult to ignore the academic benefits already documented in hundreds of experimental choice programs around the U.S., as well as in foreign countries from Sweden to Australia, it is hard to imagine even left-leaning legislators holding out for more than a few years. Especially after their parent constituents realize how much better red-state students are doing in comparison to their own children.
In other words, school choice is well on its way to becoming broadly, if not universally, implemented across the U.S.
That being the case, it is surprising how little attention has been paid to the larger social impact of a nationwide educational marketplace, especially on the economy. For the truth is that our traditional public education system has become a serious impediment to American prosperity.

Reducing the power of the Teachers Unions is a worthy goal just by its self.
Has the number of public school employees in AZ dropped along with enrollment...?
If not, publik skrewl unions will be laughing all the way to the bank.
“In other words, school choice is well on its way to becoming broadly, if not universally, implemented across the U.S.”
NEVER HAPPEN IN BLUE STATES or Purple states. For Marxists/DEMS (same) it is suicidal. The end of their control & brainwashing.......
The ugly side of school choice. Only so many kids fit in the school of choice. Those kids will be chosen by race and LTBGQ status. IOW, white/asian kids will be send to the lowest performing schools. The Liberal mind at work is a wonder to behold.
This is what may get “choice” into blue states....
The unions still get all their bucks, less work, more beanies
The “parents” get a check for every kid ... and the kids run feral in the street.
Education there plummets. o ..no.. throw mo money ..
For choice to work, you must have some personal responsibility.
It's pretty easy to see where it will work and where it won't.
Unless funding is cut for public schools it's just a head fake.
Public schools should be like public housing ...a minimum for those who really NEED it.
serious impediment to American prosperity..... understatement of the year
If the state controls the purse.....do they not control what is being taught?
Choice is a must, but we also need more schools to create competition, this should follow.
We need similar approaches in government administration.
‘Poor” people often make poor choices.
Nice house you have here in Scarsdale.
Where did you go to school?
Oh, I attended public grade school in Brooklyn.
The reality is that many poor people make poor choices because they are stupid. They have low intelligence and low IQ.
The old saying “the fruit does not fall far from the tree” is factual. However, occasionally children are born that have the aptitude and desire to improve their situation. They are willing to accomplish this by some other means than being an professional athlete, drug dealer or criminal.
This is why we need charter schools. Schools that children can go to for free if they desire to improve themselves. Most of these schools you have to test into. That is the case with the one down the street from my office in Nashua, NH.
The Academy of Science and Design(NH) is a charter school in the Nashua school system. Any NH resident can go there for free. They only provide bussing in the city of Nashua. So, every morning I pass a line of cars of parents dropping off their children. Some drive from over an hour away. That is because after being in existence for less than a decade it is now rated as the best public school in the state.
It is so well regarded that some people are choosing to send their children there instead of private high schools that cost tens of thousands annually.
Public unions should be outlawed.
*The reality is that many poor people make poor choices because they are stupid.*
Me thinks you should give them a chance.
My idea: M-F boarding schools where the poor people can work their 60 hours at their 2 McJobs and then parent on the weekends. Tired, but appreciative of the structure. Would the kids look forward to the weekends?
Volunteer adult hall monitors(authority figures) walking around wearing Smokey the Bear hats.
The main reason that Leftists oppose School Choice is that it would result in the education of blacks and other minorities.
...and what happens when people get educated? They figure out just how badly they’re getting screwed over by the people who claim to represent them.
The problem I have with it is that government money ALWAYS has strings attached and the longer it goes on, the more strings that are attached.
You nailed it, but most folks are too dim to see that.
“He who pays the piper calls the tune.”
Are the teachers better at the charter school?
And if the answer is yes, in what aspects?
Are the learning materials better at the charter school?
And if the answer is yes, in what aspects?
