People think of learning as something that happens primarily in the classroom. Still, our children learn how to “adult” by watching and being with us while we do our errands and by taking note of how we behave in any given situation.

This list was compiled by a woman. She left out a great deal, more important than hers.

Taking the family on a few simple camping trips occasionally helps to teach them to think outside of the box.

Walking on uneven ground, being in the woods, setting up a tent, building a fire and roasting marshmallows on a stick, using the bathroom, whether in a hole or a park outhouse, gathering firewood, dealing with bugs and dirt, the million little things children do and see on a couple of camping weekends a year helps introduce some creative thinking and familiarity with the physical, that will stay with them.

They don’t have to learn everything, simple car camping and playing sports would be a huge help to make them more realistic and in touch with themselves.

Are rifle, pistol, revolver, and shotgun all separate items or is there only one item for all of the above?

“They’re not putting lock cylinders on some vehicles these days and some only have 1 on the driver side door. They’ve been working on that for years, slowly phasing them out.”

What’s old is new again:

My ‘45 Dodge 1/2 ton pickup only has a lock on the passenger side of the vehicle. You are supposed to open the passenger door and slide across the bench seat to drive...

I guess we all did learn these things at one point.

I learned the hard way to carry an extra car ket, without a remote or the chip 8n it to start the car. The car had “child safety locks”, which apparently means that anytime you are least expecting it, the car will lock you out. I had a key made that just unlocks the doors and trunk, and now carry that with me all the time. It won’t start the car, as there is no chip in the key, but it is still useful. Only cost me $4 to get it made compared to $60 or so for a fob key

Had that quote framed and displayed in my living room. Try my best to live up to its advice.

I had a neighbor who’s two boys and two girls all had to solo in an aircraft and competently handle, ie, inspect, disassemble, reassemble and accurately fire a 1911 . There was a third thing but I can’t for the life of me remember it.

Better yet…teach them to read the manual. There are all sorts of neat things in my Silverado manual about what to do when fob batteries fail. This is important when you have keyless ignition.

Youth and adults needs a 50-hour course on how to fill out IRS forms W-4, state equivalent of same, federal I-9, etc. About 5% fill these out correctly. Many kids are shocked that the government takes part of their pay. One of our employees had no idea what their W2 was for.

Bath towels need to be laundered even though you were clean when you used it.

When unclogging a toilet with a plunger, step one is close your mouth

Even when stopped, a tool like a snowblower or lawn mower can still kick over one more turn when unclogged.

Start at the top when painting a wall

Know when a laceration needs professional care vs a bandage.

If you think you’ve had too much to drink (or smoke) you have.

Don’t wager any amount of money you’ll miss.

LOL...When my 30-year-old son bought his first condo, he had to make the first payment by physical check, and had never paid anything by check in his life. I helped with the first one, then he set it up on auto-pay. May still be the only check he has ever written.

The best you can do as a parent is to teach your children critical thinking and reasoning skills. Parents, do this before your young adult. Sadly, woke staff are going to try use their influence in the classroom.

Depressing this has to be even written. I moved out at 16. Couldn’t wait to be independent.

Among other doozies in the list was this...

24) They should know how to change light bulbs and batteries.

Wow.

I was doing that with all manner of things at age 7, I think.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building...

With ChatGPT on your phone this is finally actually possible, including emergency brain surgery with a hack saw, if you slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I stopped at #9, though I'll go back to the list.

I work in the Tax department of a large real estate company. One of our accountants, of Gen Z variety, touts his status as a CPA Candidate with a Masters in Accountancy.

He asked me to review a check he was sending to a taxing authority. My first reaction was OMG! The handwriting was barely legible, but it was the amount written on the check that had me questioning the value of our education system.

The amount did not have a decimal point after the last digit, i.e. the amount was 500, not 500.00. He did not see the peril of missing the decimal point.

Unfortunately, the rest of his work isn't much better. Tax returns that are budgeted for 4-6 hours are taking weeks, and they still aren't right. It took me two days to unravel and correct his mistakes, putting me behind on my work.

He is good at one aspect of the job. He's very punctual...at 5 PM, quitting time. OTOH, he never arrives at work on time, usually 30-45 minutes late.

I haven't written a physical check in years, but I have become very proficient in transferring money to my wife's account, though she keeps bragging that she her pension exceeds her bills by $1500 a month.

While I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of my finances, she says she's got it all in her head.

I'm a smart man, I NEVER go there.

I love these lists. Cause they’re always wrong.

Right off the bat
1 - Nobody does handwritten notes in snail mail anymore. And nobody needs to know how. In the time it would take most people to find a stamp they could send half a dozen emails
2 - vote by mail has taken over. My polling place has been my living room for 20 years.
3 - phonecalls? Bwahahaha. I make restaurant reservations on the web.
4 - cash?! Are these people from the 1950s. Cash is dead. Even illegal transactions don’t use cash anymore
5 - ok pound of meat is fine. Not exactly a life skill though.
6 - car manuals are kept online. Air gas and flat tires are good skills
7 - why? Really in the modern world maps are worthless. My last trip I was using a map I got halfway there and the freeway was closed due to an accident. Phone to the rescue. I stopped even bothering with maps after that. The phone is up to date, all the way to the current road conditions, map isn’t.
8 - is that a life skill? I’d probably say it more “listen to your body”.
9 - checks?! Good lord those died before cash.
10 - hey finally a legitimate actual necessary life skill that teens really should know
11-13 - also solid
14 - you’ll know your socsec by heart eventually, I wouldn’t call it a life skill so much as repetition leads to memorization
15 - well, it depends. There actually are disposable storage containers, and tuperware is going bankrupt so no need to learn about them
16 - not really a life skill, but yes, have your proof of insurance or pay the price
17 - read signs, yes good
18 - read labels, yes good
19 - go to counter, give paper, come back in 20 minutes, that’s not a life skill
20 - BWAHAHAHA, ah easterners. I’ve learned to tie a tie 3 times... and then forgot. I think I’ve only worn a tie once this century, best man at a wedding. IMHO, much better life skill is move to a part of the country where nobody where’s ties. Really, they’re basically nooses, do you really want to start every morning putting a noose around your neck.
21 - pay bills, yup good skill
22 - is that really the basics of cooking? OK fine. But it’s kind of fun to look that stuff up online. There’s actually bunches of bakes potato recipes, this stuff isn’t as cut and dry as people think
23 - look for mold, sniff test, yeah sure
24 - once again proving these people are old. 90% of the lightbulbs will never be replaced anymore. Same with batteries.
25 - rejection, good skill
26 - I think this is a repeat of read labels, good skill though
27 - garages are going away, and electric cars, still probably a good skill for another 15 to 20 years I guess
28 - or towel or placemat or plate or whatever, yeah I guess that’s a skill
29 - modern world, the way you pay tells you all about tipping most of the time now, right there, push a button, bang
30 - they’re right, and for a change they didn’t show their age by listing old methods of doing these things that nobody uses anymore
31 - use words, yeah ok
32 - tax software, mostly online now, will tell you, and heck a lot of times can “get” the paperwork for you from the businesses generating it, modern world man, it’s exciting
33 - I think that only happens when people are drunk
