The Dark Side of CPR: Why Doctors Say That it Could Do More Harm Than Good

The world’s most famous life-saving rescue technique could be worse than death in many cases, according to a new report.

Administering CPR — or cardiopulmonary resuscitation — to a cardiac arrest sufferer might seem like a no-brainer. However, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation could paradoxically cause more harm than good, according to a disturbing new NPR investigation.

“The bad experiences far outnumber the good ones, unfortunately,” Holland Kaplan, a physician and bioethicist, told the outlet about the so-called dark side of CPR. Not only is this revival method not as successful as portrayed on countless televised medical dramas — but it can leave many patients with lasting physical and cognitive impairments.

Blessings to you. It is true what you have said. CPR is a bridge to treatment. Time to defibrillation is the single most important determinant to survival and you are living proof.

Sounds like your stress test was definitively positive though.

That’s a load of cow manure.

I’ve done CPR thousands of times and never broke ribs.

Do you see a story like this as propaganda?

“...thousands...”

Do you just have that certain effect on people, DC?

Where they are mysteriously drawn to your side to become your next CPR patient?

I’m a retired Detroit EMS Paramedic.

Yes, thousands of times.

2 or 3 times a week, sometimes more rarely less for 20 years.

“Most CPR students don’t realize to be effective you have to crack the ribs. They hear ribs cracking and they think they are doing something wrong. And the survival rate is less than 10%.”

I had CPR for either 7 or 11 minutes (I was told both). I had absolutely no chest or rib discomfort after. This was done in an ambulance by paramedics and was obviously effective because I was in cardiac arrest and survived. Cracked ribs are not a requirement for effective CPR.

I heard this from the Obama ghouls at the VA when they were pestering my dad to sign a DNR. He told them to GTFOOH and don’t come back, looked like they were gut-shot.
