The internet is overflowing with pictures of food.
Many food images are uploaded to sell specific foods. The idea is that the images will make us yearn for a McDonald's burger, for example.
New research shows that images can actually have the opposite effect. At least if we see pictures of the same product repeatedly.
A number of experiments reveal that we can get a sense of satiety if we see the same image more 30 times. Tjark Andersen, explains more.
"In our experiments, we showed that when participants saw the same food picture 30 times, they felt more satiated than before they had seen the picture. The participants who were shown the picture many times also chose a smaller portion than those who had only seen the picture three times, when we subsequently asked about the size of portion they wanted," he says.
It may sound strange that the participants felt full without actually eating anything. But this is really quite natural, explains Tjark Andersen.
"Your appetite is more closely linked with your cognitive perception than most of us think. How we think about our food is very important," he says. "Studies have shown that if you make people aware of different colors of Jelly Beans, even if they have eaten all they can in red Jelly Beans, will still want the yellow ones. Even if both colors taste completely the same."
Within brain research, these findings are explained with so-called grounded cognition theory. For example, if you imagine putting your teeth in a juicy apple, the same areas of the brain are stimulated as if you actually take a bite of an apple.
"You will receive a physiological response to something you have only thought about. That's why we can feel fully satisfied without eating anything," he says.

This could end world hunger…
I find it works when I want a candy snack. I just remember what it tastes like and I don’t want it so much.
Rotten food.
Rodney Dangerfield might have said: “30 times? I can look at my wife just once and not want to sleep with her anymore!”
and eat healthier
just look at pictures of broccoli and cauliflower
instead of junk food
Plant Burger fans only need to look at pictures of a Weedeater to lose their appetite.
This would be great for backpackers!
It works when the prices are next to the food.
Lol! That can be an appetite killer!
As long as there are no price tags, I find that an image of delicious-looking food has a tendency to make me want some of it, even if it’s something I haven’t eaten before.
Looking at good food will make me hungrier...
That does help at times. Looking or smelling the aroma. I opened a fresh package of Pecan Sandies and took a hit. Nice! The “Best If Eaten By Date” was months away. I didn’t have time to eat it then, but breathing in the aroma sustained me.
haha, BS. Those food commercials on TV kill me and do exactly what they’re supposed to. They make me hungry and want to run out and get the food advertised.
As the song goes...”who’s zoomin’ who?...”. More insanity from asylum residents.(It’s the new normal. The more absurd the statement is,the more readily it becomes absolute truth.) Why didn’t God tell us how low IQs were going to dip in the last days? Oh,I guess He did...
Depends. Watching “Breaking Bad” (again), every scene with Los Pollos Hermanos got me salivating for fried chicken. I found I actually didn’t care about meth BECAUSE I sympathized with addiction:). I wanted fried chicken.
Here’s what works for me to reduce my appetite: I cook a big dinner for others. I’m barely hungry after smelling all that food during a couple hours of preparation.
Damn, wish we would have known that sooner ... could have sent pictures of food to the starving Ethiopians.
Yeah sure thing because looking at pictures feeds the body so well
Just look at the recipe for making your own Alfredo sauce. Buying it in a jar is safer.
