Ivory ban to extend to hippos and killer whales
BBC ^ | May 23, 2023 | Georgina Rannard

The sale of ivory from the tusks and teeth of five more species will be banned under government plans.

The import, export and dealing of elephant ivory was banned in the UK last year. The animals that could join the list are killer whales, hippos, walruses, narwhals, and sperm whales.

The creatures are hunted and killed for their ivory which is often used in decorative carvings.

The government plans to extend the Ivory Act 2018 to include them.

People found to be breaking the law can be given unlimited fines or be jailed for five years.

Parliament must vote on the extension of the Act before it can come into force.

The species set to be included in the ban are already at risk from climate change and habitat loss, and conservationists are concerned that poaching for ivory will drive them closer to extinction.

"The Ivory Act is one of the toughest bans of its kind in the world and by extending greater legal protections to five more species, we are sending a clear message the commercial trade of ivory is totally unacceptable," said Biodiversity Minister Trudy Harrison.

There will be a population crash in China if people can no longer obtain ground rhinoceros horn

Having spent time in African national parks and being lucky enough to have seen rhinos and hippos in the wild I think it would be beyond despicable for either of them to be hunted to extinction.

Hippos are nowhere near extinction.

Neither are killer whales.

This is pointless virtue signaling.

Rhinos are not included in an Ivory ban, because they do not produce ivory.

If scientists create lab-grown meat how about lab-grown ivory? Problem solved.

Just need dentinoma cells and a 3-D matrix.

Couldn't care less about wales. And I equate ivory with horns...it's all down to poachers.

True story: while on a long drive from Nairobi to Amboselli and Tsavo I had a chance to have a good talk with our driver/guide...a great guy named James. Not only did he have many very unflattering things to say about Somalis,he told me that the Kenyan government's official policy on poachers was "shoot to kill". No efforts to capture...or drive off. Just bang, bang!

I think walrus is off limits too unless it’s and Inuit art product.

I was once chatting in the break room about getting some mammoth ivory grips for a 1911. Someone asked me “Aren’t then endangered?”

This article indicates, "The import, export and dealing of elephant ivory was banned in the UK last year."
International trade in Asian elephant ivory was banned in 1975 when the Asian elephant was placed on Appendix One of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
I remember that the AAFES and the Navy catalogues at our BX in 1979 indicated the elephant ivory scrimshaw carvings were no longer to be sold.

How come the UK didn't ban elephant ivory fifty years ago?
