This article indicates, "The import, export and dealing of elephant ivory was banned in the UK last year."
International trade in Asian elephant ivory was banned in 1975 when the Asian elephant was placed on Appendix One of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
I remember that the AAFES and the Navy catalogues at our BX in 1979 indicated the elephant ivory scrimshaw carvings were no longer to be sold.

How come the UK didn't ban elephant ivory fifty years ago?
