The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is considering limits on certain food and drink like chocolate milk in schools to “reduce children’s risk of chronic disease.”

In February, the USDA first proposed updates to public school nutrition standards that would limit sodium intake and added sugars from students’ diets. Among its proposals included limiting the amount of flavored milk, such as strawberry and chocolate, in high schools while outright prohibiting it in elementary and middle schools.

“USDA is proposing to allow flavored milk for high school children only (grades 9-12). This approach would reduce exposure to added sugars and would promote the more nutrient-dense choice of unflavored milk for young children when their tastes are being formed. The proposed regulatory text for this alternative would allow flavored milk only for high schools (grades 9-12),” the proposal read.

It continued, “Children in grades K-5 would again be limited to a variety of unflavored milk.” […]

In contrast, some nutrition directors criticized the proposal, noting that chocolate milk still contains essential nutrients and is the preferred beverage of children. …

“No kid is getting fat by drinking a little carton of chocolate milk. These leftist bureaucrats are all mentally disturbed, a joyless miserable bunch.”

Leftist bureaucrats have an agenda. This is likely unrelated to kids health and more about shunting govt money to the Biden money laundering service

That aside, it’s not a carton of chocolate milk. It’s a daily supply. A staple

People pretend kids are eating well and having a treat here and there. No. Tgey are growing up on crap. Drive by a bus stop. Tak a look.

The problem is that they have soda and chips available to purchase. Who thought that was a good idea?

We had no such access. People feed their kids crap and give up control

Yup. If you've ever been in a school cafeteria, the regular milk ends up in the garbage, unopened.

Chocolate milk isnt the key to obesity. It’s everything else we are eating.

“ Yup. If you’ve ever been in a school cafeteria, the regular milk ends up in the garbage, unopened.”

Again, we had no access. We were kids. If we had a choice we would toss the regular milk and go for the sugar

Parents give their kids over to this public school system and expect it to feed them properly

That’s pure insanity

There’s no basis in logic, history, economics or common sense for tgat assumption

As parents, the government takes something bad for kids away from them and people are outraged. They think the government hasn’t been given that right. They have. By the parents

I don’t think one cup of chocolate milk with lunch is why they’re so fat.

It’s not chocolate milk making kids fat! It’s all the junk food and a lack of regular outdoor play and other physical activity.

My thin active child enjoys chocolate milk and can have it with my blessing. The government can keep its nose out of my business as can other busybodies who think they know what’s best for my child

I had a chocolate bar for lunch for my four years of high school. The government didn’t pay for it...I made friends with the man that filled the machines. ;_0

Yup —in the ‘50s to early ‘60s we only got chocolate milk on Fridays —regular milk rest of the time, no exceptions. But we kids were active, had recess a couple of times during the school day and we didn’t sit on the couch and watch TV when we got home.

I don’t feel bad about this for the kids. Now, if they would allow them recess to get some exercise and fresh air.

Part of the problem is that food manufacturers and restaurants have dramatically reduced salt, sugar, and fat in their food.

Unless you make your own meals and snacks, it is no longer possible to eat to the point of satiety.

I remember my Mother sending me with homemade bread, peanut butter and jelly(often homemade) and an apple(or some other piece of fruit) for lunch in the 60’s. No chips or other candy.

Two points:

- Some kids are very slim, and they need the extra calories.

- In the 2000’s, the advice was to drink chocolate milk (instead of sports drinks).

How about restricting food stamps/SNAP to fresh foods - NOT McDonalds, chips, sodas, candy, cookies, sugary cereal and prepared foods.
