Easy to armchair quarterback a shooting.

Yes it is. Many who have never had to decide, and shoot, and live with the consequences, are quick to judge, and even cheer.

Many people on this myriad forum are not speaking from armchairs like the fool who shot the video, who, were he a man, would have gotten out of his car and helped.

This is not a situation in which I would have taken a life.

The shooter knows it, too, now, no matter what they tell him in counseling.

This isn't a movie, and this isn't war. This is a mentally disturbed man with a stick. I pray if you, my FRiends, are ever in a situation like this, you pull way out of the tunnel-vision of the immediate "threat," see things as they are, holster, and find another way.

Remember this advice. Dismiss it if you absolutely need to, but remember it.

Guy did agonal breathing. Automatic when body has too little oxygen. Big gulps. Difficult to watch. My guess is the perp was very drunk or on drug which made him unable to think

You should see me, straight & sober, after a walk up to my garage and climbing into my pick-up.
Can't remember if it makes me unable to think though.

I know of a case where a burglar took 4 rounds of 45 auto and survived. He was a doper, not sure where he is now.

Something I learned a loooong time ago during the 57 years I lived in NYC.

See a cop with his gun out.....Freeze, Drop or Disappear.....which, depends on the situation.

It’s why a .45 ACP is great for stopping a target - the slow slug packs a wallop and literally pushes back...

I don’t know that the Deputy had “another way” that did not risk serious injury or worse.

From the timeline, it was 59 seconds from the time Deputy Pruitt reported on the radio (continuous connection, apparently) that he was on scene, to the point he reported “Shots fired, shots fired.” It’s unlikely backup could have arrived in time.

Deputy Pruitt did yell over the radio as the situation deteriorated “I need help!”

Witness King stated he believed Pruitt’s life “was clearly in danger”.

One good whack on the head from a strong man with a “stick” can knock someone out*, perhaps permanently disable them.

*And then what — perp now has your gun.

Pruitt intended to use his taser, but it apparently was damaged in the initial tussle (prior to the vid we see).

Costlow was clearly far superior physically to Pruitt, who retreated and kept retreating, but Costlow aggressively followed.

It appears to me Pruitt initially tried shooting Costlow in the arm holding the stick, and Costlow STILL kept coming.

Every cop in the world is going to tell you to NOT interfere in an armed confrontation such as this.

This was a horrible situation - other than being a fellow with a job with the gov’t at some points, Mr. Costlow appears to have been a great guy to those around him, and he had his brain “snap” possibly from brain damage in an accident and pain meds taken for an injury. God rest his soul, but perhaps going out this way was for the better, as he may have been mentally in torment the rest of his life. (Even if he recovered from his psychiatric problem but had done awful injury to the deputy?) God only knows...

He had a psychotic break.

Their only option would have been to call police and bring him to ER and hope for an admission

The obituary is chilling, and of course complete bullsh!t.

What drove this guy to do what he did to get a LEO to shoot him full of holes.

And I’m actually glad it took 12 shots. Fodder against those who claim 10 per mag is enough.

As is often the case, depends on where the rounds go.

Sometimes it is just resolve. We had a church member that was a Phoenix cop on an arrest team. They lost their target and gave up and broke for lunch. Without his vest this Sgt was shot through the heart and subsequently shot and killed the perp while defending his partner.

Yes. Some are however more deadly and some more apt to cause collateral damage.

The 357 mag loads I like to shoot, would not be wise in a city. Sheriff came to my house after we had one of many burglaries at our farm. I told him I never go there at night without being armed. Asked him if he would like to see my hand gun. He did not seem too interested until I went to where I keep it and handed him the holstered pistol and told him it is loaded. It is heavy and he could see the HP jacketed bullets. I told him about the load I shot. He handled it with caution and then handed it back to me.

I did that for a reason. One to convince him that I knew how to handle it and that I don’t want to harm anyone. Then I told him about 2 previous incidents that I had in my life when a hand gun prevented a real threat.

Subject has never come up again.

I seldom carry it, in spite of the relaxed open carry laws here. I do carry it when at farm at night.

We are moving there soon. To see the thieves stop. It is the only way it will.
