Yeah, let’s operate on live steam. Great idea! What could possibly go wrong?

That was probably producer gas, which is a viable way to use many fuels. Unlike furnace combustion of wood, coal etc a producer gas system uses smaller amounts of airflow and thus produces less smoke while ash is more easily capured, not going up the flue (which actually runs through the engine for its fuel).

Flash boiler apparently was the best. It was by Doble. I’m sure it had its downfalls.

I would love to have steam. It isseriously powerful. But it is hard to get steam up. Hence why steam is basically only used for huge plants that are best to run constantly. Locomotives had to be up and running almost constantly and hence required more maintenance.

So now, steam is still awesome for running power plants. Those you don’t need to stop as we’d rather have continuous power in our networks. So itis good ROI

Cars are a big challenge because we don’t want them running all the time. And steam head takes to long to build. Not instantaneous like ICE or a charged EV

No. Orville was all about corn, in high school. This guy was all about weed. One winter, his basement flooded, and all of the pot seeds in his shag carpeting sprouted. The ‘70s were great.

I disagree. Poop in the streets is common in San Francisco.

We still rely on steam engines....in a turbine form, to push our nuclear ships and subs. If their systems could be miniaturized....

They can. They still have the problem of taking time to build up a head of steam. (That expression actually means something).

We use gas turbine engines to power ships, airplanes, and tanks. They take a little longer to start than piston engines, but the difference isn't nearly as great.

This happened to them...

The internal combustion engine... As long as you tune it up every now and change the oil on a regular basis... It will last forever!

Yeah, let's operate on a flimsy tank of highly flammable liquid hydrocarbon. Great idea! What could possibly go wrong?

I would point out that steam powered vehicles require an additional change of state to produce the expanding steam for motive power reducing efficiency.

Gasoline, diesel, or flammable gas powered internal combustion engines are far more efficient.

No that was ICE. Know that thing on the engine called crankshaft? Guess why. You turned that yourself. Usually the front of the car but wherever the engine was.

Kettering’s ignition changed that so electricity turned the crankshaft.

My dad professionally restored high end cars. He had a Doble steam car in the shop for awhile. The car belonged to Bill Harrah and dad was doing some paint and bodywork on it. I remember it being a very large and beautiful car.

Back in HS, a friend used to wonder about the possibility of a microwave heat/steam engine combination.

It would almost certainly be more efficient just to use the electricity used to create the microwave energy to drive the wheels. Was he going to use batteries to power the microwave? If he was going to use the steam to power a generator and to drive the vehicle, he would have a problem patenting it, since U.S. law does not allow patent protection for perpetual motion machines.

Depends. I don’t know what the cars used. Fuel is anything that can heat up water to change state. Anything.
