Hello all. My wife and I are buying a house and we need to demo and remodel the kitchen. I have been looking for generic timeline samples and lists of things that need to be done and questions to ask of contractors but I'm not having much luck.
Question: Is anyone here a contractor or has experience with home kitchen remodels that might be willing to help me find relevant materials to make the job go smoother.
Thanks
I guess if the company has to use subcontractors they might as well make money on the materials......better than nothing.
Would you employ someone who when you send them to your jobs tries to steal the customers, I think you would replace them when you found out.
Good points, all.
I am holding out for Wolf, Sub-Zero and/or Cove appliances.

Sub-Zero brand was made in Madison, WI, but I’m not sure who owns who these days, with the combination of names/brands.
Until then, I’ll keep lighting the burners with matches and when I put something in the oven, I’ll hope for the best, LOL!
We bought a floor model Maytag fridge/freezer 5 years ago, and so far I’m pleased with it. It really keeps fruits and veggies fresher longer. But, the ice maker died a few months in, so I have to make ice cubes LIKE AN ANIMAL!
(It’s not THAT bad!)
Yeah those are good appliances all right. Small fortunes too.
I mean its also not bad to replace a dangrous appliance if you cant fix it. You don’t want to mess around with a potential gas leak if valves aren’t working or something’s corroded.
My husband and I have done two kitchens together. For the cabinets we used all plywood construction for the upper cabinets. For the lower cabinets we ordered plywood front with particle board for the back and shelves. This saved alot of money. The all plywood construction is not a important for the lower cabinets.
Find a kitchen installer who will measure to the nth degree, have cabinet choices. We did that and they used some laser measuring tool. Provided drawings, etc. Everything fit perfect. We picked our own backsplash tile and kitchen counter Cambria. Nothing better. Done in 2009 and still looks new. Also picked out our own sink, try Franke sinks, a German company.
ps We recommend Bosch for a dishwasher. High quality and so quiet!
Sure. $25/hr. if you are looking for cheap help. But if you are looking for competence and experience by people who know how to bring a job together without the headaches of contant callbacks and a lifetime of hidden problems...be prepared to spend $80 to $100/ hour for a GOOD project manager. As the old saying goes “you get what you pay for” so cheaping out will cost more in the long run. “Excellence is a long way from competence and incompetence twice as far” L.Star
Whether you refinish the cabinets you have or get new ones, make sure they are strong enough to carry the weight of granite countertops. An acquaintance of mine bought particle board and they collapsed from the weight of the stone.
Agree that having the new materials in hand before any demo will shorten the timeline and make the project much smoother.
bookmark , we need both a kitchen and a master bathroom remodel. Not looking forward to the process. Looking for contractors.
Estimate $60,000 and then add another third unless it’s a fancy kitchen with a six burner stove top, full sheet double ovens, engineered quartz countertops and fancy large refrigerator. Then estimate $150,000 and add in another fourth.
I like mahogany traditional face frame cabinets. And so will your kitchen contractor. $$$$. Kidding aside cabinets go by the linear foot with a separate charge for upper and lower get the per foot price from a cabinet shop the add up all the other stuff and the labor to install and then add another 20%.
Went to Golden Corral on North Division in Spokane today. Was wonderful to be back at a full service buffet after both of ours closed with COVID. But unfettered gluttony comes at a cost now: $22 with senior discount.
I second that recommendation.
We bought a Bosch dishwasher and like it. Very reliable and very quiet. Does a great job. Lots of cycles to choose from and it is easy to set a delay start to run it while everybody is sleeping.
I got beautiful used solid plywood box cabinets with solid ash fronts, came with a lot of high end extras, from RenovationAngel.com. They are a 501(C)3 non-profit recycling entity which gets generally high-end kitchens donated, often including the appliances and countertops. They show each kitchen thoroughly on their website, including any damage or imperfections, list the brand/wood species, any extras, provide a blueprint giving sizes, etc. This is how I avoided having a 6 month “supply chain problem” wait. I paid a fraction of what new cabinets would cost, and got them in a couple of weeks. On their website, they say “50% TO 90% OFF EVERYDAY
Pre-owned Luxury Brands, Showroom Displays, and New-in-Box Products”. Check it out!
We’re remodeling the whole house to sell it but Mr. GG2 is the contractor with a Lowes Pro Account. Lowes is very helpful but their contractors are subs so its basically just a referral. I’d just look on Craigslist and ask for references from other clients.
