There may be rules in the courthouse concerning the lapel pins. When I was watching a trial once I saw that people had to tuck their cross necklaces inside their shirt when entering the courthouse. This was in Bama, but NY may have similar rules.

one male at his attorney’s table had a lapel pin in court...I couldn’t tell what it was.
Maybe it was an SS guy, not an attorney.
