Handyman turns the tables on squatters who took over his mother's house

A handyman turned the tables on suspected squatters who took over his mother's Northern California home.

"If they could take a house, then I could take a house," Flash Shelton of the United Handyman Association said in a YouTube video. "They're the squatter, and they have rights. Well, then, if I become the squatter on the squatter, then I should have rights, right?"

Shelton's video detailing his quest to reclaim the California home has garnered more than two million views on YouTube.

Shelton said his father recently passed away, and his mother couldn't live in the house on her own. So they put it up for rent.

So he hatched a plan. Shelton wrote up a lease agreement between himself and his mother designating Shelton as the legal resident of the home.

He loaded some guns and his dog into his Jeep and set off for California, arriving at 4 a.m. to find cars in the driveway. Shelton said he parked down the street and waited until everyone left the house several hours later.

Shelton let himself in using the keys to the house. Video shows a bed and other furniture sitting inside the home as well as boxes of belongings and what appears to be a California Department of Corrections uniform.

Shelton said he started installing security cameras when two women pulled up to the house.

"I'm really sorry about all this," one of the women can be heard saying in a video Shelton recorded. "It's a nightmare and beyond."

Shelton told the woman that if she didn't have everything out by midnight, he'd have it hauled away. The alleged squatters missed the deadline, but were gone by three, Shelton said.

"Quicker just to use the dog and guns."

Yeah, a quick way to end up in jail, especially in California.

What this really represents is the END OF PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS.

This is full-blown Marxism and it may require all-out war to eliminate it. The law and the judicial system have failed the American people because those in leadership are, themselves, nothing but criminals.

Americans MUST defend their right to keep and bear arms or we will NEVER see a return to the rule of law.

Thanks for posting this. I actually have concerns about squatters rights for a piece of property that I may ineherit atleast 50% of sometime in the future. A neighbor to that property has been aloud to run a drain pipe onto our property for many years without being legally properly challenged for it. So it is an issue in the back of my mind.

He may be doing something criminal by diverting water unto you.

Talk to whomever owns the property now and see what they say. The owner of the pipe may have been given permission. Just do something now.

If you know where the property line is, terminate the drain.
Waiting will only make it more difficult to deal with.

Report it to your city code enforcement and see what they say, and you can probably do it online if your not where the property is.....if it’s a violation they live to fine people and put Leins on property......if I had an hour I’d tell you how I know that 😏

Beware of that. The claim of “adversarial possession” can be used to extinguish your property rights. Use the property for something, cut the grass, park a car build a small shed, but actively use it.

Talk to a lawyer before you do anything.

If you say anything to the neighbor, they might launch legal proceedings. It is possible if you quietly make alterations to things, without him knowing, he will not be able to claim you allowed the pipe without issues, and you can claim you were still asserting control over the property.

Don’t make a move if you do not know how it will play out legally.

Agree. It is about Adverse Possession. Your neighbor may not know about the legalities. If you can afford a consultation with a lawyer there, I would suggest it.

I can’t believe we’re at this point in our country. We truly are becoming a third world country when we have videos on how to get your house back from squatters.

100% agree. The latest push to do away with bail is directly tied to property rights. If a person doesn’t have property, they’re more likely to abscond after posting bail so reducing or doing away with bail is intended to put criminals back on the street.

Commiefornia.

I have a buddy who bought a Condo years ago when he was stationed out in San Diego. He kept it and started renting it out when his MOS changed and he was stationed elsewhere. Everything went well for about 15 years until recently when his tenant just changed the locks and stopped paying. This being Commiefornia its going to take at least 6 months to evict the deadbeat.....because thieves who steal your property by not paying rent have “rights”. You, as the poor schlub who owns the property and pays Commiefornia’s taxes on the property have far fewer rights. You just have to sit there and take it. Because......reasons.

Yet another example of how Leftists have ruined a once great state.

His only mistake was to not bring more dogs. He could borrow from friends. I have no idea what race the squatter was. But I do know that blacks fear other people’s dogs.

But I think all squatters can be run off with dogs. Be sure to bring a locksmith to gain entry. In case the squatters changed the locks. Or drill through them yerself.
