Legendary rock guitarist Brian May has received a knighthood from Britain’s King Charles III.

May, who was a founding member of the band Queen, will now be known as Sir Brian, following the investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

The star received the title of Knight Bachelor for his services to music and to charity. He attended the ceremony alongside his wife, Anita Dobson, a former star of long-running British TV soap “EastEnders.”

Congratulating him online, a tweet from Queen’s official account said: “Arise Sir Brian May

“Brian’s investiture as a Knight of The Realm took place today at Buckingham Palace. The knighthood was presented to Brian by His Royal Highness, King Charles.

“Many congratulations, Sir Brian!”

There was also a post on the royal family’s official Twitter account about the event, picturing May alongside British saxophonist YolanDa Brown, who was also honored.

May, 75, was one of more than 1,000 people honored on King Charles III’s first New Year’s honors list, announced in December 2022.

In addition to performing with Queen since the 1970s, May is also an astrophysicist. He received his PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College London in 2007 after taking a break from his studies in the 1970s to focus on the band.

He is also a vocal supporter of animal rights and critic of hunting. In 2010, he formed an organization called the Save Me Trust, to campaign against fox hunting and badger culling in the UK.

May isn’t the only member of Queen to have received a royal title. Drummer Roger Taylor was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2020. May previously received the title of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2005.

Brian May famously performed a rendition of “God Save the Queen” from the roof of Buckingham Palace at Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.

Upon hearing the news, Brian May told King Charles, You’re My Best Friend.

I could have sworn that Brian already did receive this medal.
Maybe the entire group of Queen did. They were a huge money maker for Britain at height of their fame. Lots and lots of Pounds there for the taxing.

You mean they didn't pull a U2, and moved their operations to The Netherlands to avoid taxes?

As a rocket scientist he should have no problem calculating the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow.

Back when Queen was raking in the dough, Swiss Banks were doing the same thing for anonymous account holders, and it was all perfectly legal. I suspect some of that continues even now, but not ever officially. Bitcoin makes it easier to hide/ sequester large amounts of money.

Your My Best Friend.
Good song. Either on Sheer Heart Attack or ‘Opera’.

Can you imagine lowering yourself to a submissive kneeling position in front of another human (I am most assuredly excluding receiving Holy Communion in a kneeling position in front of God. The presence of the human server is simply incidental).

Every time an entertainer gets a knighthood I think of Sir John Falstaff from Shakespeare.

I think the Byzantine emperor demanded full proskynesis ie go flat on your face, like a Muslim at prayer

Already true I think of the Roman Emperors by the late 3rd century, around when they started to be portrayed with halos, which were once reserved for the gods.

In Ravenna at the Church of San Vitale, both Justinian and Theodora have halos.

Tons of musical talent. And even has an advance degree in astro physics or some such thing. But he has said political things that made my skin crawl.

Yes, it’s legal. He became King the instant his mother died with all the rights and duties that come with it.

The Coronation is an important ceremony where he takes certain oaths (although he also took his first oaths as King the day after the Queen died at his Accession Council) but it is basically ceremonial in terms of his legal powers.

There’s also no requirement to be King to knight somebody - he knighted people as Prince of Wales, and other members of the Royal family also carry out these investitures from time to time.

Catholic priests go prostrate when they receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. It's probably the same with the Orthodox Church.

I realize Protestants might find certain Catholic & Orthodox practices to be a little odd.

He was appointed as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), which is basically one step below a Knighthood in 2005. The only other member of Queen to have an honour in the British system of chivalry and honours is Roger Taylor who was appointed as Officer in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2020. I am rather surprised that John Deacon is not an OBE, but he may well have declined the honour. If he had lived longer I am sure Freddie Mercury would have eventually been honoured as well, probably along similar lines as Sir Brian - an initial honour at a lower level, with an eventual knighthood.
