Massive skilled labor shortage sparks nationwide refocus on technical education
Campus Reform ^ | March 10, 2023 | Jared Gould

Awareness of the nation's massive labor shortage problem is increasing.

The problem is encapsulated by the latest news out of Kentucky, where one carpenter’s skills are in high demand.

Charles Breedlove’s job “takes him everywhere ... even [to] the water," where he is building a boat deck in the small town of Paducah, according to Kentucky news station WPSD Local 6.

He says that demand for his services is growing, but he’s among the few left who knows how to do the job.

As reported by Industrial Skilled Trades, “[f]ewer workers are entering the trades, especially among the younger population.”

“You are spouting a line similar to what our enemies propaganda creators say. “America is no good, everything here is corrupt”.”

Obviously you don’t have kids who recently graduated from Ivy League schools.

For every one of those, there are many with backgrounds in the trades.

Any machinists in tha house? I’ve been one for 30+ years and I have a complement of related mfg skills including CNC Programming, 3D solid modeling, tooling design, QC support, Shop floor documentation, etc. I can tell everyone here first hand that the reason there’s a shortage of skilled labor in mfg is simple. Wages SUCK! I live in Northern Alabama, near Huntsville. Thats right! Aerospace mfg central. Way too many machine shops even right here want to pay a 10 year CNC machinist $15-$20 per hour and I am NOT exaggerating. There is NO reason to get into cutting edge skilled machining if the guy cant afford to pay a mortgage unless he works 10+ hours per week overtime. It didnt used to be this way.

My BEST FRIENDS are in the trades (electrical and ac) and they tell me that virtually every person at their continuing education classes is in their 50s or 60s.

So quit pulling crap out of thin air, unless you think it’s a GOOD THING to watch immigrants take over our trades.

(and, come to think of it, I suspect that’s the case)

And you're the only one who does this?

Inquiring minds need to know.

That is the other component to wages and skilled labor, you have to be willing to go were the work and wage demand is.

A skilled labor in a location where there is a glut of that skill will definitely suffer from depressed wages.

My son, who will be 29 in May, is making $53k/year as a welder in a small shop. Working on getting additional certification so he can keep moving up.

“ So quit pulling crap out of thin air, unless you think it’s a GOOD THING to watch immigrants take over our trades.”

So then Bob, get off your a$$ and quit complaining and do something about it.
Have you volunteered to go into high schools and help promote the trades
Volunteered with a pro-trades industry group?

Have you reached out to an elected representative ?

Sitting and bitching on an Internet forum accomplishes NOTHING.

Report back to me what actionable things you have done.

The fact is that there is not a glut of skill here. There are help wanted signs all over here just like in most areas. Why would you assume that there are either more workers than jobs here or plenty of workers available to fill the jobs. Just google CNC machinist Huntsville and take a look for yourself. Its not just here. Look at CNC jobs all over the country. Skilled machinist used to command a way above average pay and that has gone way down. Its a shame really. Theres no reason for a kid to get into this trade skill at a technical college.

I have no idea what that means. I do know he’s good at what he does. Got a friend of his hired at the same place, and was kind of shocked at how bad his friend is at math, whereas he can do most of it in his head. Welding isn’t all about the actual WELDING, as it is figuring out angles, etc. He took calculus in high school just to see if he could do it, not that he needed another math credit. Turns out it was a piece of cake for him. You would NOT think that about him if you saw him (typical hipster look... beard, long hair, etc) but he works his ASS off.

so there's the problem....when men fail, they find someone to blame instead of themselves...the women....

aren't you men supposed to be far stronger, more intelligent, dominant and you now claim that the women intimidate you so the men folk won't go to college or learn a trade....

poor liddle dears.....

its pathetic the shape of American manhood ......nothing like my fathers generations...nothing like my brothers....

lets just be honest....too many young men are just lazy....addicted to their computer porn and video games....

we could never wage a war with this bunch....geez, most of them won't or don't know how to breed....

Letting women have political power has led DIRECTLY to the end of Western world domination, as neither Russia nor China has made that mistake.

Golden arm is a slang term for a very good and precise welder.

This work was done by a golden arm:

Exactly. Before I retired, I drove 2 hours a day one way for 25 years to a high paying job troubleshooting and repairing CNC machines.

In my local area, pay for CNC machinists and electro mechanical technicians is depressed because the business owners collude with one another to keep wages low.

Their HR people tell the workers, that's what the going wage is here.

Then they wonder why they can't find people.

I completely agree with you. It is neither our responsibility nor within our power to fix a defective man. Real men do not need women to affirm their masculinity. American men are more like trans people: they think if they can hector enough people into agreeing that they are the gender they present as that will make it true.

35% of white men in this country are stupid enough to vote Rat, the party that openly discriminates against them as white men, yet you never see any male Freepers blaming them for the decline of Western civilization. I guess the bromance is in the air again.

As I’ve said a few times on this forum if a woman supports conservative causes and there is no man to see her do it, is she still a Deep State supporter?

“Report back to me what actionable things you have done.”

Kiss my Beutruss. You have NO CLUE as to what I do, and it’s none of your business.

Anyone here who DENIES that this country has gone to shit, and now decides to start WW3 against two superpowers AT THE SAME TIME, is simply lying.
