Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, the southern rock band's last surviving original member, has died at the age of 71.
"It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today," the band posted Sunday evening on Facebook.
His cause of death was not immediately clear.
Rossington cheated death on multiple occasions, Rolling Stone reported. In 1976, he survived driving his vehicle into the tree. One year later, he survived a plane crash that killed the band's lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines.
He’s now a free bird.
Yes we will.
I met them while in the Marines after a concert in 1975 or 76...............
“in 1976, he survived driving his vehicle into the tree.”
And a year later the Street Survivors album gave birth to the song That Smell and the immortal lyric “Oaktree Your In My Way”......damn tough way to write a song if you ask me. 😏
Went to the wedding of my friend's daughter a couple years ago (at Langley AFB), the groom, (a major) had the first dance with his mom to "Simple Man" - it was pretty sweet.
Damn, I’m getting old. My only consolation is that everyone else is too.
71 in rockstar years is 101 in commoner years and 120 in pornstar years. Love Lynyrd Skynyrd. Fly high free bird, yeah...
This is the very first recording of Free Bird...not any like your used to.
Would you believe me if I told you my father in law and his partner recorded it and 5 others here before MCA scooped them up, and that my wife is now half owner of all 6 of those songs?
True story.....every word.
From 2 years ago...

Rolling Stone - Gary Rossington, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Last Original Member, Dead at 71
I saw them at Lakeland Civic Center in 1977 about 24 hours before the plane crash.
It does she get royalties?
Appreciate it.
After my wife’s dad died we found a demo cassette tape in his car of those six cuts....going through his effects after he passed away we also found lyrics for a tribute song he wrote about Ronnie Van Zant.
My wife is considering copywriting it and looking for someone to put music to it.
Yep,royalties come in twice a year.
We can see where the purchases were made.....all over the world.
I tell her if I’d have known she was Rock n Roll royalty I’d have married her 10 years before I did. 😁
Now that’s just plain funny
Good for her
Saw them with Jethro Tull in 1975.
Ronnie Van Zant came out during Tull’s set holding a liquor bottle and began singing, very drunk, with Ian Anderson. His band mates eventually came out and dragged him off stage.
Good times.
