Florida may tweak resign-to-run law to aid a potential DeSantis 2024 run, leaders say

Just four years after Florida’s Legislature made sure politicians would have to resign before running for federal office, they seem poised to change the rules again.

The impetus is Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is widely speculated to be eyeing a presidential run, especially following this year’s landslide reelection victory.

“Candidly, we have gone back and forth based on the circumstances of the moment,” House Speaker Paul Renner said in a statement when asked about his support for changing the rules. “In this case, it’s an honor for someone from Florida to even consider running for President.”

“Candidly, we have gone back and forth based on the circumstances of the moment”

In other words it depends on who the potential candidate is.

If you read the article it says they did the same thing for Charlie Crist in the past.

Reading the law itself, it appears that people running for the offices of the President and Vice President are exempt.

Not quite sure what needs to be tweaked.

Well, this should give all the DeSantis haters ("OhMiGod!! He's a one-world globalist RINO!") plenty to chew on. < G!> Of course, Ron DeSantis still has not tossed his hat into the ring, and seeing as it's still almost two years until the next Presidential election, that's an eternity in politics -- who knows what will happen in that time.

I'd give even odds that he will declare his candidacy by summer, although if he wants to remain in Florida and keep up the fantastic work he's been doing here, I think we can live with that.

There is actually one organization pushing for him to run, "Ready for Ron", which I suppose should come as no surprise.

Would DeSanctus have to sign the bill into law, or could he for purposes of discretion merely refrain from issuing a veto?

That is my understanding.

Perhaps.

Reading the law itself from this handout I linked to above this post, it appears clear as day that DeSantis would be exempt, yet this other reading I found of the law is as clear as mud and does not appear to list those same exemptions.

Change the rules again.

Sounds like something the democrats would do not good.

DeSantis wants to run take the risk or stay out of the race period.

Similar moves were made in 2016 in Kentucky for Rand Paul as he could not appear on the ballot twice for two primaries and he was up for re-election for the Senate the same year.

Ultimately the State Party got around this by holding a caucus for President outside of the regular state primary so he would not appear on the primary ballot twice.

I have seen a post on here a few months ago wherein it was said that photograph and other similar family photos were proof he was part of a global cabal - because apparently family photographs are a feature of only those involved with the Deep State. I’m not even kidding.

He most definitely should not resign! We need him to finish his work here in Florida!

DeSantis and Trump need to smoke the peace pipe and get on about their jobs - being a GREAT Governor and a GREAT Presidential candidate, respectively!

Trump in 24!

DeSantis in 2028 and 2032!

We can do this!

The DeSantis family would easily win “Family of the Year” award.
But does that equal presidential candidate? I like to think so, but maybe not.
