I'm in the market for a new smart tv.

Posted on 02/23/2023 3:38:01 AM PST by LouAvul

Mine is a Sony Bravia. When it turns on, it's got programmed advertisements for the "cause-du-jour" at the top of the screen.

Currently, since this is black month, there's a picture of a domestic terrorist named angela davis in the 60s, running her mouth. And it's A. Big. Mouth.

I want a smart tv that doesn't have all that nonsense and propaganda on the opening screen. It's bad enough that Amazon Prime constantly pimps those liberal causes (black month; homo pride; etc), but I'd like to not have it on the opening screen.

I thought they are pretty much all made in the same factories in China regardless of brand name.

How could you project from a laptop to a normal-size TV/monitor?

HDMI cable.

SMART Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology

Has nothing to do with you except you as a product.

Why do you think tvs are so cheap.

I do have to say I have a twenty three year old Sony 42” and a five year old Sony 60” and they are both flawless. As far as services I have to have fairly broad cable coverage and the related high cable/internet bill. I went to KU and when Basketball is being broadcast, I am watching or recording it.

I like some college football as well and some news coverage, but KU Basketball is in control of my life.

My wife likes a lot of crazy shows showing how stupid people are as well as items like Court TV running the Murdaugh trial or people wasting millions digging holes in islands in Nova Scotia. We are old and easily amused.

I guess you have picked up that there is a good chance that the startup screen banners are able to be turned off and home screen is also something that can be changed to last channel. If you still have all the documentation for the TV re-read it or get the model number off the Tv and download the operating instructions.

Yes you can cable a laptop to a larger screen. I have that too. Best Buy has the cables to do it.

Yeah, that is why it is better to get a box ( I suggested android since he wanted to stay away from Amazon, so that excluded the fire stick. Haven’t used Roku since not available here).if he was looking for a new tv just to avoid the startup he is having now, just disable the internet access on the tv.it is always better to get a box, since in the future it is cheaper to just get a new box when fastr processors another hardware improvements come out than getting a new tv

Two Samsung’s here, roughly 5 and 6 years old. Neither
has start up screen ads. Both have + channels from
various Pluto broadcast channels.

Go to a store where you can see the screens to compare the video quality of lots of different models. Believe your lyin’ eyes, not the brand name or salesman steering.

That said, I’ve been happy with a series of Roku boxes and one Roku TV, for, hmm, a really long time now. I prefer separate boxes for the occasional road trip (e.g., taking it along to a friend’s house) and on the off chance that one of the TVs dies.

Do look at Rting.com for the best television, once you determine from these comments what approach you want to take.

Rtings.com even tells you the settings you need to tweak to get the highest quality from the television.

We bought our large screen Roku TV from their review, then did all the tweaks, and the image is like being in the theater.

For someone who already has a Sony Bravia, I can tell that picture quality is important to you.

Simple fix.

Use the HDML 1 port for cable TV/internet TV input.

Use the HDML 2 port for an AppleTV 4K (or whatever latest version you can buy).

Set the AppleTV REMOTE to turn on (AND toggle to turn off) simultaneously BOTH the TV and the AppleTV via the remote’s on/off button.

Fire up the TV and AppleTV device via the AppleTV remote, and it should automatically activate the HDML 2 port, giving the AppleTV interface, from which you can do all streaming services you pay for, and you shouldn’t see the tv’s internet/cable wakeup screen.

Alternatively, you can use an Amazon Alexa cube and do the same thing.

You use your TV’s remote to switch from HDML 2 to 1 or DVD input, etc., as desired.

There are some shows I record on my digital recorder as part of my Cable TV package, because those shows don’t play on the streaming apps until the season is over (or unless you watch commercials, and I want to fast forward on the commercials).

I have both the AppleTV and Alexa boxes (Alexa on HDML 3), and AmazonPrime shows have a more robust user interface and options than with the Apple menu, if that’s important to you.

Disney, HBO Max, AMC+, Peacock, Paramount+, etc. all do just fine on the AppleTV menu.

Duh, I said HDML, thinking of HTML, but of course I meant HDMI.

If it’s an Apple laptop or iPhone and you have an AppleTV box, you can cast directly to the TV. Works nicely with Youtube stuff and family pictures via SMS.
